The most exclusive club in the world: Barack Obama lunches with four U.S. presidents

Between them they have 24 years' experience of the most powerful job in the world.

So if Barack Obama was after any advice before assuming power later this month, today's meeting with the four surviving U.S. presidents was the perfect opportunity.

The historic White House lunch was suggested by the President-elect and organised by George W Bush, who thought it would be interesting for his successor to hear
some 'war stories'.

President Bush and Mr Obama met privately before the gathering to discuss the U.S. economy and the Middle East crisis.

Mr Obama would have also received plenty of advice from the ex-presidents, who all tried and ultimately failed to broker peace in the region.

President Bush told his successor: 'One message that I have and we all share is that we all want you to succeed.'

Mr Obama called it 'an extraordinary gathering' during which he hoped to learn more about the 'pressures and possibilities of this office'.

Considering the bond they hold in history, US presidents rarely get together, particularly at the White House. When they are in the same room, it is usually for a milestone, such as the opening of a presidential library, or a sombre moment like a funeral for a world leader.

Enjoy the job: Incoming and outgoing U.S. presidents Barack Obama and George Bush grin at one another during today's lunch

The president and his three predecessors were last together in January 2007 to attend the funeral of former President Gerald Ford.

The last White House event to draw the former presidents was a November 2000 celebration in honour of the White House's 200th anniversary. But one of the former presidents, Ronald Reagan, who was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease, was unable to attend.

All of the living presidents were last at the White House in 1981: Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, who was president at the time. The ex-presidents were there before leaving as part of the American delegation to the funeral of Egypt's Anwar Sadat, who had been assassinated.

On that day, all the presidents stood in a circle inside the White House, discussing news of the world. The dominant topic? The Middle East.

The presidents' power lunch came after Mr Obama announced that Nancy Killefer, who was assistant Treasury Secretary in the Clinton administration, will act as a watchdog to streamline spending in his new administration.

She is being appointed as America’s first ever ‘Chief Performance Officer.’

Since his return to the capital last week, Obama has focussed on melding bipartisan support for an economic rescue plan that will cost taxpayers a much as a trillion dollars.

Obama will be inaugurated as the next US President in a ceremony in Washington on January 20.
I noticed that picture in our local newpaper.
All five presidents have squinty eyes.

It looks like they are all "Turning Japaneese"

ALL of their hands look strange-look at Carter's mismatched HANDS Cheers
What were they ever thinking?

Makes me want to jump in the old time machine and make sure certain peeps got diverted from their matings.

Or at least hide Jimmy's brown shoes.
I thought Clinton was way tall. now he's shrunk down to the same size as Junior who does the foot thing, wears out the outside of his left shoe standing like the dunce that he is. NONE of their shoes are as shiny as the Royals have their lackeys keep theirs and JIMMY'S GOT BROWN SHOES ON-how weird-those elites... damn the specialness just seeps right out off the page.

I hope that place has been super bugged all along and the tapes will come out. No telling what that group thinks is so funny. ugh
Yesss...there are other conflicting signals......

eg...necktie colors......and look at the lapel pins worn by Obama and Bush Jr.
Remember how Obama previously refused to wear the flag pin, BUT NOW he's apparently seeing things Bush's way...... <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/whistle.gif" alt="Whistle" title="whistle" />

GW: Man, I can't get rid of this wedgie...

CLINTON: Is Cathouse on HBO tonight?...

CARTER: What a bunch o' pricks! Get me outta here...

Hmm2
the pic has to be faked, bill wouldn't take time out from stuffing some young intern for that bullshit
One thing I noticed that ONLY Obama has the CORRECT length for his pants and two...his hands are covering the most important thing to him thinking they while they might not go after him with a head shot they might take a shot at his privates so he's keeping that covered up while Bill Clinton is of course playing with himself behind his own back.

And yeah QO it looks like King Gorgie Jr IS suffering from a wedgie and likely Bill gave it to him. Pennywise Gawd I hate to say Philly Plait might be smarter :uni:

Washington DC's elite Alfalfa Club has only 200 or so members, mostly drawn from the worlds of business and politics (and specifically not from journalism).

Since 1913, the club has feted various leaders and jokingly nominated its own presidential candidates in an annual booze-and-giggles off-the-record black-tie dinner.

President George W. Bush attended the Alfalfa Club dinner every year of his presidency. And President Obama will be there Saturday night.

One other guest? Yesterday in Juneau, Alaska, Gov. Sarah Palin told reporters should would be there. Strictly as an advocate for Alaska, of course.

“The Alfalfa dinner, yes, in fact that’s because President Obama is scheduled to be there," Palin said. "And how often will I have an opportunity to have dinner with the president? I will take up that offer to do so."

(I hope none of the "terrorists" whom Palin during the campaign repeatedly accused the President of "palling around with" will be there. Could be a security issue.)

Incidentally, this week Palin launched her own Political Action Committee.
