I'm considering the idea of "set and setting"
as applied to a hybrid image of foreground and background.

As you can tell from the last image you worked on
it's still not possible to get a mirror finish on metal.
I've tried, with partial success, to render a bright wide neon edge filter as a layer over the base image.

I cannot remember the fellow ... paul nylander ... i think it was quaternion fractals',
he got mirror finishes,
his good quality images disappeared

I was visiting the MJ stores today.
You should have seen it.
The sunny warm weather brought out the entire town.
Lines twenty people long buying weed.
For every two people that went out the door,
three came in.
I had to leave, too many people, went for a long run, came back,
and it was still almost as crowded in both stores near the university.

Time to stock up before that dick head Sessions unleashes the feds.
They could easily shut the whole thing down.

HAHA!!!

I was thinking of rotating it 180
and using it for an absinthe decanter.

Reworked this next,
and tried an "auto white balance" filter
after recalling Keith mentioned using one.
It had the effect of yielding the blue toned areas

I can see gargoyle face possibilities
with the Malinovsky/Gilgamesh Head formula.
It also has a Julia mode that can show
the totem designs covering a hollow interior
just as Juliabulbs, and the mushroom shape is from
a default setting.
The eyes have the most 3D detail.
There is a "power" setting that is broken down further
into 4 different equations that offer distortion tweaks.
But I don't see anything like petal # vs power.

...once again I need to do something about too much black shadows.

That image two images back is outrageous.
It reminds me of an abstraced drawing I made in my youth of a married psychedelic couple.
I called it Tokharathopheseon and his wife.
I will look for it.
It's the way your two figures are posing in 3D like that,
which brings back the distant memory.

I was working today on taking images to resell antique stuff.
I got sidetracked on a pretty heart shaped dish, with a unusual interior pentagonal design,
etched and gilded simple glass work circa 1830s or so, probably German.
Most of the gilt decoration is faded, but some of the etching shows up.
So I placed it on a background that might promote geometry processing.

These dishes were often gifts for lovers and wives.

looks like my center splice was off a hair, oh well, late evening blindness

"...might promote geometry processing."

That's an understatement.
At first I thought you had come up with a truly transparent layer
but not literally.
Try testing that crystal with different light or laser.

I've got a new one to post
that might work as one part of an n-gon.
............

lol
I found it quickly.
Sorry I couldn't resist,
in any case your exceptional 3D strange god entities in that image,
somehow reminded me of these two lovers in another dimension, as well.
I was 33 years old and drawing in a back bedroom,
on a cold stormy and lonely night in late November.

This is some kind of empirical evidence
that quantum superposition is real
in the usual "spooky" sense.

It ties in with the idea that numbers affect physical reality.
Jung made a huge study of "synchronicity"
and other related phenomena.
Inspired by your Rube Goldberg quantum transceiver schematic
I cobbled this together from spare parts...

I just realized that Chaospro allows layers WITHIN the program.
I have no idea what this portends
except that I saw some examples when I first got the program,
and as I recall there seemed to be a merging between layers
beyond what I know about GIMP.

Here's the result of a LavaCloud run through a "GEGL Operations/mirrors" filter...

OK... I'm not claiming this multiple angled mirror filter
is equal to what you're doing, but it seems like an easy way to avoid the problem of seams.
It was the first use of the filter
so I'll see how it does with a more ordered image.
...
Seams appear as bad conjuctions of spliced geometric template forms coming together.
It is a case of not going about the processing with detailed slow methodology.
Often the eyes don't see the mistake.
If I take time and make sure the joining of two pie shaped templates come together perfectly,
then there are never any visible seams.
It is quite difficult with huge images and bad eyes.
Also some geomtries do not allow perfect whole number degrees.
For instance, one cannot perform tetrahedral geometry in regrid unless you have tenths of a degree,
to work with in the program which is limited to single full degrees.
With octagonal geometry I have to slightly cheat in the degree discrepancies,
and do clip cuts of overhanging extra template designs that exceed degree values.

Regridding images goes far beyond just the geometry.
One has to create a replicating template, and that is where the real art is.
It is a lot more sophisticated processing than you might suspect.

I like the Vorlon with the overlay chest medallion.

Interesting in the pentagonal rendition,
that the program creates a symmetry without the mirroring.
What is it ... a click of a programming button and it rearranges into pentagonal geometry?
What are the limits of the symmetries available
ie
can it do an eight ...  seven or nine sided figure?

Actually I was thinking more like an alien spice pipe...

The filter is called GEGL Operations
and "mirrors" is one to choose from.
Within that are settings for how many mirrors,
plus mirror rotations and final center of the n-gon, etc.
One click defaults to a hexagonal pattern of whatever image.
The background for the Vorlon is a heptagonal
generated by 7 cloud fog layers.
So far I've tried 2->7 mirrors, and I assume it can go much higher.
I've got one to be posted that's a 7-gon
also ran through a "seamless map" filter
making it suitable for tiling.

One thing about last image...
I could have tweaked the final image rotation 1 or 2 degrees...

I found another filter that will map the image onto a sphere.

...
the image selected is too much congested detail,
whereas the pentagonal one had ... breathing room ...
The program still has limitations   ...?
unless you can submit any reconstituted image back into the processing,
ie
can it recombinate a heaxgonal grid of pentagons?

Quote:I found another filter that will map the image onto a sphere.

Can you map any of the images that were reconstitued geometrically in my grids,
onto a sphere?

experimental exercise derived from old photography

I see that I somehow missed a step in the replications.
Note the 4 globular reflections sticking out just under half way from the center to the perimeter...
there are supposed to be eight of them.

...
I got great resolution on that image right here at HM
using the computer magnification to 500%.
...
Yes...this mirrors filter has limitations
because it's another "experimental stage of development" filter that GIMP unfortunately allows.
It only defines one center point, which can be offset,
but doesn't allow multiple centers of rotation (what I think I see, anyway)
and so I can't render a hexagon of pentagons
unless the original image contained large angles
that might unite when the mirrors rotate.

This next has the hexagon part,
subjected to a "color embossing" filter...

I think this one might have great resolution.
