The Mars Cydonia Mounds,
create the tetrahedral hexad.

If you don't like the premise of the Cydonia Mounds,
one thing you cannot dispute,
is that the hexad,
is a direct construct,
of the square root two triangle tetrahedral geometry.
Another apsect,
you cannot dispute,
is the the fundamental basic geometry,
of the Khafre Pyramid Side Faces,
is the angle tangent {4 / 3} ---- = {2 / 1.5 -- in the deisgn}
developed from the 3 - 4 - 5  triangle.

In my designs here of the Khafre Pyramid Octahedral,
that Khafre Pyramid Side Face Angle,
is designated as -- angle K.

Therefore , review the last post instructions <---
and as such,
the points on the exterior of the --Square Hexad,
that AUTOMATICALLY is generated by:
the tetrahedral hexads circumscribing the Khafre Octahedral,
the points on the exterior of the --Square Hexad:
are labeled with a small K,
like this ---G k,
in relation to the positioning of the square hexad to the Side Face angle K.

This design shows how the Square Hexads attach <---
to the Khafre Pyramid Octahedral construct or solid.

It was Dr. Crater UTSI,
that named my Khafre hexad construct -- the Square Hexad <---
That is because it sits within:
a 2 x 2 square.

This is somewhat of a grand finale for the Khafre Pyramid geometry,
all emanating from:

that is OK,
you still have to accept that the hexads presented,

are clearly extracted from as hidden ancient code <---

is defined precisely -- as it sits within the octahedral of hexads.

Because that same process of using the new angles -- a  and  b,
created by the blue line PD <---
is very important in the upcoming -- Square Hexad geometry display.

The angle tangents for angles  a  and  b,
are divided,

A designated:
"Mars sidereal" attribution or component to the ancient math is displayed,
by using the fractional result of the angle tangents division,-- {10 / 7}
A succession of Khufu pyramid heights,
generated by cubits is evidenced in the math.
It all has been concised and simplified,
and somewhat scrunched into the small space left available in the image framework.

The prospect of a heirarchy of -- "Mars sidereal attributive cubit alignments",
may sound convoluted,
but that is how it works -- and leads diectly into Menkaure Pyramid Petrie style data.

Then see the common equation using my royal cubit:

cubit 20.618 18 18~  x  33.33333333~ = 687.27 27 27~ ---> times ---> aPi  =  2160 --   aPi = 22 / 7

2160 --- aligns the equations to -- 360 count -- 6 x 360 = 2160

The interesting aspect of "Mars sidereal" value 687.27 27 27~,
is that for every ---> 2520 cycles of 687.27 27 27~ <---
you subtract,
exactly one cycle of 687.27 27 27~,
and the equation cycle is balanced to exactly 2520  x  687 <---- Mars sidereal.
That is one ancient accounting method in timelines.

With that revelation of accounting,
the 2520 cycles <----
works DIRECTLY ---> into Petrie --Menkaure Pyramid data!

Decimal float shifting  is applied to accomodate proper decimal placement <---

The Khafre Pyramid Octahedral -- Side Faces -- Square Hexad


The "square hexad" was given that name by Dr. Horace Crater,
when he reviewed my work,
on the 3D crystallization created by the tetrahedral hexads.
The square hexad situtates itself within a square grid:
2 by 2 units.

Hexad lengths  of note:
Point D -- to the point -- at angle q -- equals -- square root two <---

Point B -- to the point -- at angle q -- equals -- Phi minus 0.5 <---

Cydonia Mound E  is not labeled in the hexad <----
so as to not confuse it with -- angle q.

PD = square root 6.25
PA = square root 5 =  GB
GA = square root 2

The most important angles to note,
that showed up within the hexad,
{aside from the direct Khafre Pyramid angles}
are angles h ---> with arctangent 4,
and the arctangent Phi angles,
seen as angle x <--- in the image.

Of note as well,
was from combined angles -- df -- arctangent {8 / 19},
and to finish the ancient code processing:

in the Khafre Pyramid Octahedral:

is that the new angles created by the blue line PD,

The square hexad,
is then automatically generated on the Khafre Pyramid Side Faces,
as indicated earlier.

Both tetrahedral and square hexads,
generate the complete Khufu Pyramid Pi Cubit Systems,
when the blue lines are drawn from Mounds P to D,
and the resultant additional geometry is accounted for.

If you don't like -- Cydonia Mounds -- as tetrahedral hexad geometries,
that is OK,
so then you just have to look at it from pure geometry perspective:
---> the pure tetrahedral hexad and Khfare Pyramid geometries <---
as they integrate together in the many examples given.

From the perspective of pure geometry,
in both tetrahedral and Khafre pyramid 3-4-5 triangle geometry,
the mathematical evidence is totally accounted for and undeniable, 
that the ancient Khufu Pyramid geometry and cubit system codes,
are handily and perfectly extracted from those tetrahedral,
and Khafre pyramid -- angle tangent geometries.

Any:
angles not identified in the hexad,
are simply ---> the negative tangent ---> of the angle -- adjacent to it.

To understand the important scope -- of this post,
you have to review the Square Hexad geometry {prior image}
and the 4 or 5 posts prior,
that define the process --- especially the post -- at bottom of last page <--

The Square Hexad
icing,
on the Khufu Pyramid cake,

Khufu Pyramid Side Face angle slope tangent,

If you think that the Egyptians were that inefficient in their measures -- you are wrong.

but most likely it is exactly how the historic measures indicate:

New math bridges holography and twistor theory

The modern-day theoretical physicist faces a taxing uphill climb. "As we learn more, reality becomes ever more subtle; the absolute becomes relative, the fixed becomes dynamical, the definite is laden with uncertainty," writes physicist Yasha Neiman.

A professor and head of the Quantum Gravity Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST), he grapples with this conundrum on a daily basis. Quantum gravity, Neiman's branch of physics, aims to unify quantum mechanics, which describes nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles, with Einstein's Theory of General Relativity—the modern theory of gravitation as the curvature of space and time. How, he asks, can physicists write equations when the geometry of space itself becomes subject to quantum uncertainty? Quantum gravity, the current frontier in fundamental theory, has proven more difficult to detangle than previous concepts, according to Neiman.

"With the concept of space slipping between our fingers, we seek out alternative footholds on which to base our description of the world," he writes.

This search for alternative footholds is, in essence, a search for a new language to describe reality—and it is the subject of his most recent work, published in the Journal of High Energy Physics. In the paper, Neiman proposes a new vantage point on the geometry of space and time—one that builds on well-established approaches in physics, like holography and twistor theory, to reach new ground.

Holography is an offshoot of string theory, the theory that the universe is made up of one-dimensional objects called strings, which was developed in the late 1990s. Holography imagines the ends of the universe as the surface of an infinitely large sphere that forms the boundary of space. Even as geometry fluctuates within this sphere, this "boundary at infinity" on the sphere's surface can remain fixed.

For the past 20 years, holography has been an invaluable tool for conducting quantum-gravity thought experiments. However, astronomical observations have shown that this approach cannot really apply to our world. "The accelerating expansion of our universe and the finite speed of light conspire to limit all possible observations, present or future, to a finite—though very large—region of space," Neiman writes.

 

In such a world, the boundary at infinity, where the holographic picture of the universe is based, is no longer physically meaningful. A new frame of reference may be needed—one that does not attempt to find a fixed surface in space, but which leaves space behind altogether.

In the 1960s, in an attempt to understand quantum gravity, physicist Roger Penrose proposed such a radical alternative. In Penrose's twistor theory, geometric points are replaced by twistors—entities that most closely resemble stretched, light ray-like shapes. Within this twistor space, Penrose discovered a highly efficient way to represent fields that travel at the speed of light, such as electromagnetic and gravitational fields. Reality, however, is composed of more than fields—any theory needs also to account for the interactions between fields, such as the electric force between charges, or, in the more complicated case of General Relativity, gravitational attraction resulting from the energy of the field itself. However, including the interactions of General Relativity into this picture has proven a formidable task.

So can we express in twistor language a full-fledged quantum gravitational theory, perhaps simpler than General Relativity, but with both fields and interactions fully taken into account? Yes, according to Neiman.

Neiman's model builds on higher spin gravity, a model developed by Mikhail Vasiliev in the 1980s and '90s. Higher spin gravity can be thought of as the "smaller cousin" of String Theory, "too simple to reproduce General Relativity, but very instructive as a playground for ideas," as Neiman puts it. In particular, it is perfectly suited for exploring possible bridges between holography and twistor theory.

On one hand, as discovered by Igor Klebanov and Alexander Polyakov in 2001, higher spin gravity, just like string theory, can be described holographically. Its behavior within space can be captured completely in terms of a boundary at infinity. On the other hand, its equations contain twistor-like variables, even if these are still tied to particular points in ordinary space.

From these starting points, Neiman's paper takes an additional step, constructing a mathematical dictionary that ties together the languages of holography and twistor theory.

"The underlying math that makes this story tick is all about square roots," writes Neiman. "It's about identifying subtle ways in which a geometric operation, such as a rotation or reflection, can be done 'halfway.' A clever square root is like finding a crack in a solid wall, opening it in two, and revealing a new world."

Using square roots in this way has a longstanding history in math and physics. In fact, the intrinsic shape of all matter particles—such as electrons and quarks—as well as twistors, is described by a square root of ordinary directions in space. In a subtle technical sense, Neiman's method for connecting space, its boundary at infinity, and twistor space, boils down to taking such a square root again.

Neiman hopes that his proof of concept can pave the way toward a quantum theory of gravity that does not rely on a boundary at infinity.

"It will take a lot of creativity to uncover the code of the world," says Neiman. "And there's joy in fumbling around for it."

I had proven that back in 2011 with that pdf --- but now the process,
and methodolgy -- is cleaned up and presented better with fresher images.

It is difficult to draw 3D representations,
of hexagonal or pentagonal pyramids.
No matter what you do, the true perspective is a bit skewed.

Essentially, these image designs presented are to facilitate --> Apex Angle <-- testing,
just to determine,
what the angle tangents are,

If you study Apex Angles in ancient Egytian pyramids,
you had better get a handle on modern geometry constructs as well.

How f-ing boring can ancient pyramid geometry get?

You can bet that the ancient Egyptians observed their pyramid Apex Angles.
Khafre Pyramid -- side faces -- apex angles -- arctangent {24 / 7} -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I am surprised that the ancient cultures didn't at least try a hexagonal pyramid.
Then there is the pentagonal pyramid ... the D&M on Mars.

The "electron spin" tetrahedral angle,
so named from geometry presented by Dr. Crater UTSI,
in his SPSR Cydonia work.
This would be the tetrahedral angle:

Extracting An Ancient Earth Sidereal Year Constant
from ancient angle tangent testing.

I ran into this Earth sidereal year value a couple of years ago,
while surfing through harmonic code extrapolations.
I didn't write down the process, and forgot how to get there.
Lost it in the abyss of harmonic code data.
Fast forward to a couple months ago,
and I am revisiting / rechecking a premier ancient angle tangent test Whip

In this angle tangent test,
the standard ancient Khufu Pyramid slope tangent {14 / 11} -- and angle --- 51.84277341 degrees,
are front and center.

Now to really test the angle tangent system,
aPi ---> is assigned to be an angle tangent <--- with a resultant angle   aPi = 22 / 7

I didn't mean any disrespect, but when someone posts a hypothesis it should come with a conclusion or at least the author personal opinion of what all the numbers displayed mean (basic college education), if you went to college you know that for graduation purposes you write a paper with your hypothesis and you end the paper with your own personal conclusions of what your work is all about. I didn't mean to say I don't care about the numbers I should have said I don't understand what all those numbers mean.

In other note I just watched a show about the city of El Mirador that showed a lot of what you have written and a lot of what EA just posted. Check El Mirador and you may find more argument in favor of your studies.

I approached the number from the perspective of Convergence Dynamics in ---> Harmonic Code.
Gilson performed his Convergence Dynamics work on the FSC from the perspective of ---> physics.
My approach was obviously much easier to accomplish,

For anyone who has ever wished there were more hours in the day, geoscientists have some good news: Days on Earth are getting longer.

A new study that reconstructs the deep history of our planet's relationship to the moon shows that 1.4 billion years ago, a day on Earth lasted just over 18 hours. This is at least in part because the moon was closer and changed the way the Earth spun around its axis.
"As the moon moves away, the Earth is like a spinning figure skater who slows down as they stretch their arms out," explains Stephen Meyers, professor of geoscience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and co-author of the study published this week [June 4, 2018] in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
It describes a tool, a statistical method, that links astronomical theory with geological observation (called astrochronology) to look back on Earth's geologic past, reconstruct the history of the solar system and understand ancient climate change as captured in the rock record.
"One of our ambitions was to use astrochronology to tell time in the most distant past, to develop very ancient geological time scales," Meyers says. "We want to be able to study rocks that are billions of years old in a way that is comparable to how we study modern geologic processes."
Earth's movement in space is influenced by the other astronomical bodies that exert force on it, like other planets and the moon. This helps determine variations in the Earth's rotation around and wobble on its axis, and in the orbit the Earth traces around the sun.
These variations are collectively known as Milankovitch cycles and they determine where sunlight is distributed on Earth, which also means they determine Earth's climate rhythms. Scientists like Meyers have observed this climate rhythm in the rock record, spanning hundreds of millions of years.
But going back further, on the scale of billions of years, has proved challenging because typical geologic means, like radioisotope dating, do not provide the precision needed to identify the cycles. It's also complicated by lack of knowledge of the history of the moon, and by what is known as solar system chaos, a theory posed by Parisian astronomer Jacques Laskar in 1989.

The solar system has many moving parts, including the other planets orbiting the sun. Small, initial variations in these moving parts can propagate into big changes millions of years later; this is solar system chaos, and trying to account for it can be like trying to trace the butterfly effect in reverse.
Last year, Meyers and colleagues cracked the code on the chaotic solar system in a study of sediments from a 90 million-year-old rock formation that captured Earth's climate cycles. Still, the further back in the rock record he and others have tried to go, the less reliable their conclusions.
For instance, the moon is currently moving away from the Earth at a rate of 3.82 centimeters per year. Using this present day rate, scientists extrapolating back through time calculated that "beyond about 1.5 billion years ago, the moon would have been close enough that its gravitational interactions with the Earth would have ripped the moon apart," Meyers explains. Yet, we know the moon is 4.5 billion years old.
So, Meyers sought a way to better account for just what our planetary neighbors were doing billions of years ago in order to understand the effect they had on Earth and its Milankovitch cycles. This was the problem he brought with him to a talk he gave at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory while on sabbatical in 2016.
In the audience that day was Alberto Malinverno, Lamont Research Professor at Columbia. "I was sitting there when I said to myself, 'I think I know how to do it! Let's get together!'" says Malinverno, the other study co-author. "It was exciting because, in a way, you dream of this all the time; I was a solution looking for a problem."
The two teamed up to combine a statistical method that Meyers developed in 2015 to deal with uncertainty across time—called TimeOpt—with astronomical theory, geologic data and a sophisticated statistical approach called Bayesian inversion that allows the researchers to get a better handle on the uncertainty of a study system.
They then tested the approach, which they call TimeOptMCMC, on two stratigraphic rock layers: the 1.4 billion-year-old Xiamaling Formation from Northern China and a 55 million-year-old record from Walvis Ridge, in the southern Atlantic Ocean.
With the approach, they could reliably assess from layers of rock in the geologic record variations in the direction of the axis of rotation of Earth and the shape of its orbit both in more recent time and in deep time, while also addressing uncertainty. They were also able to determine the length of day and the distance between the Earth and the moon.
"In the future, we want to expand the work into different intervals of geologic time," says Malinverno.
The study complements two other recent studies that rely on the rock record and Milankovitch cycles to better understand Earth's history and behavior.


A research team at Lamont-Doherty used a rock formation in Arizona to confirm the remarkable regularity of Earth's orbital fluctuations from nearly circular to more elliptical on a 405,000 year cycle. And another team in New Zealand, in collaboration with Meyers, looked at how changes in Earth's orbit and rotation on its axis have affected cycles of evolution and extinction of marine organisms called graptoloids, going back 450 million years.

"The geologic record is an astronomical observatory for the early solar system," says Meyers. "We are looking at its pulsing rhythm, preserved in the rock and the history of life."

Radiocarbon dating is a key tool archaeologists use to determine the age of plants and objects made with organic material. But new research shows that commonly accepted radiocarbon dating standards can miss the mark—calling into question historical timelines.



Archaeologist Sturt Manning and colleagues have revealed variations in the radiocarbon cycle at certain periods of time, affecting frequently cited standards used in archaeological and historical research relevant to the southern Levant region, which includes Israel, southern Jordan and Egypt. These variations, or offsets, of up to 20 years in the calibration of precise radiocarbon dating could be related to climatic conditions.

Manning, professor of archaeology at Cornell University and director of the Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory, is the lead author of "Fluctuating Radiocarbon Offsets Observed in the Southern Levant and Implications for Archaeological Chronology Debates," published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Pre-modern radiocarbon chronologies rely on standardized Northern and Southern Hemisphere calibration curves to obtain calendar dates from organic material. These standard calibration curves assume that at any given time radiocarbon levels are similar and stable everywhere across each hemisphere.

The Cornell-led team questioned those assumptions.

"We went looking to test the assumption behind the whole field of radiocarbon dating," Manning said. "We know from atmospheric measurements over the last 50 years that radiocarbon levels vary through the year, and we also know that plants typically grow at different times in different parts of the Northern Hemisphere. So we wondered whether the radiocarbon levels relevant to dating organic material might also vary for different areas and whether this might affect archaeological dating."

The authors measured a series of carbon-14 ages in southern Jordan tree rings, with established calendar dates between 1610 and 1940 A.D. They found that contemporary plant material growing in the southern Levant shows an average offset in radiocarbon age of about 19 years compared the current Northern Hemisphere standard calibration curve.

Manning noted that "scholars working on the early Iron Age and Biblical chronology in Jordan and Israel are doing sophisticated projects with radiocarbon age analysis, which argue for very precise findings. This then becomes the timeline of history. But our work indicates that it's arguable their fundamental basis is faulty—they are using a calibration curve that is not accurate for this region."

Applying their results to previously published chronologies, the researchers show how even the relatively small offsets they observe can shift calendar dates by enough to alter ongoing archaeological, historical and paleoclimate debates.

 

"There has been much debate for several decades among scholars arguing for different chronologies sometimes only decades to a century apart—each with major historical implications. And yet these studies ... may all be inaccurate since they are using the wrong radiocarbon information," Manning said.

"Our work," he added, "should prompt a round of revisions and rethinking for the timeline of the archaeology and early history of the southern Levant through the early Biblical period."

NASA finds ancient organic material, mysterious methane on Mars

NASA's Curiosity rover has found new evidence preserved in rocks on Mars that suggests the planet could have supported ancient life, as well as new evidence in the Martian atmosphere that relates to the search for current life on the Red Planet. While not necessarily evidence of life itself, these findings are a good sign for future missions exploring the planet's surface and subsurface.

The new findings – "tough" organic molecules in three-billion-year-old sedimentary rocks near the surface, as well as seasonal variations in the levels of methane in the atmosphere – appear in the June 8 edition of the journal Science.
Organic molecules contain carbon and hydrogen, and also may include oxygen, nitrogen and other elements. While commonly associated with life, organic molecules also can be created by non-biological processes and are not necessarily indicators of life. 
"With these new findings, Mars is telling us to stay the course and keep searching for evidence of life," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, in Washington. "I'm confident that our ongoing and planned missions will unlock even more breathtaking discoveries on the Red Planet."
"Curiosity has not determined the source of the organic molecules," said Jen Eigenbrode of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, who is lead author of one of the two new Science papers. "Whether it holds a record of ancient life, was food for life, or has existed in the absence of life, organic matter in Martian materials holds chemical clues to planetary conditions and processes."

Although the surface of Mars is inhospitable today, there is clear evidence that in the distant past, the Martian climate allowed liquid water – an essential ingredient for life as we know it – to pool at the surface. Data from Curiosity reveal that billions of years ago, a water lake inside Gale Crater held all the ingredients necessary for life, including chemical building blocks and energy sources. 
"The Martian surface is exposed to radiation from space. Both radiation and harsh chemicals break down organic matter," said Eigenbrode. "Finding ancient organic molecules in the top five centimeters of rock that was deposited when Mars may have been habitable, bodes well for us to learn the story of organic molecules on Mars with future missions that will drill deeper."
Seasonal Methane Releases

In the second paper, scientists describe the discovery of seasonal variations in methane in the Martian atmosphere over the course of nearly three Mars years, which is almost six Earth years. This variation was detected by Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite.

Water-rock chemistry might have generated the methane, but scientists cannot rule out the possibility of biological origins. Methane previously had been detected in Mars' atmosphere in large, unpredictable plumes. This new result shows that low levels of methane within Gale Crater repeatedly peak in warm, summer months and drop in the winter every year.
"This is the first time we've seen something repeatable in the methane story, so it offers us a handle in understanding it," said Chris Webster of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, lead author of the second paper. "This is all possible because of Curiosity's longevity. The long duration has allowed us to see the patterns in this seasonal 'breathing.'" 
Finding Organic Molecules
To identify organic material in the Martian soil, Curiosity drilled into sedimentary rocks known as mudstone from four areas in Gale Crater. This mudstone gradually formed billions of years ago from silt that accumulated at the bottom of the ancient lake. The rock samples were analyzed by SAM, which uses an oven to heat the samples (in excess of 900 degrees Fahrenheit, or 500 degrees Celsius) to release organic molecules from the powdered rock.



Whatever whacked mars...was Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...   back in the day.

Ancient meteorite tells tales of Mars topography

By looking at an ancient Martian meteorite that landed in the Sahara Desert, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) scientists and collaborators have determined how and when the red planet's crustal topographic and geophysical divide formed.



Northwest Africa (NWA) 7034 is the oldest Martian meteorite discovered to date, at approximately 4.4 billion years old. The meteorite is a breccia (it contains a variety of different crustal rocks that were mixed together and then sintered by heating) and is the only sample from Mars with a composition that is representative of the average Martian crust. The meteorite provided the researchers a unique opportunity to study the ancient crust on Mars.

The team applied a number a radioisotopic dating techniques to determine that the divide (or dichotomy) between the heavily cratered southern highlands of the planet and the smoother plains of the northern lowlands formed prior to the formation of NWA 7034 at 4.4 billion years ago. This ancient age is consistent with a giant impact origin for the crustal dichotomy. The research appears in the May 23 edition of the journal Science Advances.

"If the Martian crustal dichotomy formed as a result of a giant impact, and available data and modeling suggest this is likely, the history of NWA 7034 requires that it formed very early in the planet's history, before 4.4 billion years ago," said LLNL cosmochemist Bill Cassata, lead author of the paper.

The dichotomy is a sharp contrast between the southern hemisphere and northern. The two hemispheres' geography differ in elevation by 1 to 3 kilometers (km). The average thickness of the Martian crust is 45 km, with 32 km in the northern lowlands region and 58 km in the southern highlands. The northern lowlands comprise about one-third of the surface of Mars and are relatively flat. The other two-thirds of the Martian surface are the highlands of the southern hemisphere. The difference in elevation between the hemispheres is dramatic (the highlands are very mountainous and volcanic). Three major hypotheses have been proposed for the origin of the crustal dichotomy: endogenic (by mantle processes), single impact or multiple impacts.

The team set out to determine when and how the crustal dichotomy formed.

Based on new radioisotopic measurements and in conjunction with other published data, the team determined that all the rocks that eventually were incorporated into the NWA 7034 breccia were emplaced about 4.4 billion years ago in the "source terrain" (the crustal source region that the different breccia components are derived from). The results show that this terrain was subject to prolonged metamorphism associated with a large plume-fed volcanic center from ~1.7 to 1.3 billion years ago. The areal extents of large, plume-fed volcanic centers on Mars are thousands of square kilometers, and the source terrain was likely comparable in size. Finally, they showed the rock was brought together ~200 million years ago or more recently. When viewed together, the data from NWA 7034 demonstrated that large volcanic terrains survived within a few km of the Martian surface since >4400 million years ago. This indicates that the dichotomy formed prior to 4.4 billion years ago, as near surface rocks would have been buried or destroyed by the dichotomy-forming event.

 

"This multi-disciplinary study, combining both traditional and innovative geochemical techniques has provided us with some exciting new insights into the timings of major processes that shaped young Mars," said Caroline Smith, head of Earth Sciences Collections, principal curator of meteorites at the Natural History Museum and another author on the paper.

This team's results have important implications for our understanding of when and how one of the oldest, and most distinctive, global geologic features on Mars was formed.

"This study demonstrates that multiple radioisotopic dating systems that are reset by different metamorphic processes can be used to tease out the thermal history of a sample over billions of years," Cassata said.
