Hold on – the ancient Egyptians may have known about the metre, but surely they didn’t know about the second? Perhaps they did. The length of two sides of the base of the Great Pyramid is the distance a point on the equator moves through space in exactly one second.
I’m sure if you tried hard enough, the Great Pyramid may be found to contain some mathematics that support imperial measures, even though things like the foot and inch were not anywhere near close to existence 4500 years ago, and anyway are promoted as being based on human properties, not mathematical ones. But there is one thing that really does indicate that the ancient Egyptians were very familiar with the metre. I mentioned early on in this article that the cubit, which was used to build the Great Pyramid (each side has a length of 440 cubits), was 0.524 m long, an apparently odd relationship to the metre. Let us however look at three equations:

A Megalithic Yard (MY) is a unit of measurement of about 2.72 feet (0.83 m),[1][2][3] that some researchers believe was used in the construction of megalithic structures. The proposal was made by Alexander Thom as a result of his surveys of 600 megalithic sites in England, Scotland, Wales and Brittany.[4] Thom also proposed the Megalithic Rod of 2.5 MY.[5] As subunits of these, he further proposed the Megalithic Inch of 2.073 centimetres (0.816 in), one hundred of which are included in a Megalithic Rod, and forty of which composed a Meglithic Yard. Thom applied the statistical lumped variance test of J.R. Broadbent[6] on this quantum and found the results significant,[7] while others have challenged his statistical analysis and suggested that Thom's evidence can be explained in other ways, for instance that the supposed megalithic yard is in fact the average length of a pace.

Margaret Ponting has suggested that artefacts such as a marked bone found during excavations at Dail Mòr near Callanish, the Patrickholme bone bead from Lanarkshire and Dalgety bone bead from Fife in Scotland have shown some evidence of being measuring rods based on the Megalithic Yard in Britain.[9] An oak rod from the Iron Age fortified settlement at Borre Fen mearured 53.15 inches (135.0 cm) with marks dividing it up into eight parts of 6.64 inches (16.9 cm). Euan Mackie referred to five eighths of this rod 33.2 inches (84 cm) as "very close to a megalithic yard".[10] A hazel measuring rod recovered from a Bronze Age burial mound in Borum Eshøj, East Jutland by P. V. Glob in 1875 measured 30.9 inches (78 cm). Keith Critchlow suggested this may have shrunk 0.63 inches (1.6 cm) from its original length of one Megalithic Yard over a period of 3000 years.[11]
Thom made a comparison of his Megalithic Yard with the Spanish vara, the pre-metric measurement of Iberia, whose length was 2.7425 feet (0.8359 m). Archaeologist Euan Mackie noticed similarities between the Megalithic Yard and a unit of measurement extrapolated from a long, marked shell from Mohenjo Daro and ancient measuring rods used in mining in the Austrian Tyrol.[12] He suggested similarities with other measurements such as the ancient Indian gaz and the Sumerian šu-du3-a.[12] Along with John Michell, Mackie also noted that it is the diagonal of a rectangle measuring 2 by 1 Egyptian remens.[13][14][verification needed] Jay Kappraff has noted similarity between the Megalithic Yard and the ancient Indus short yard of 33 inches (0.84 m).[15] Anne Macaulay[16] reported that the Megalithic Rod is equal in length to the Greek fathom of (2.072 metres (6.80 ft))[15] from studies by Eric Fernie of the Metrological Relief in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.[17]

Thom's proposals were initially ignored or regarded as unbelievable by mainstream archaeologists.[18]
Clive Ruggles, citing astronomer Douglas C. Heggie, has said that both classical and Bayesian statistical reassessments of Thom's data "reached the conclusion that the evidence in favour of the MY was at best marginal, and that even if it does exist the uncertainty in our knowledge of its value is of the order of centimetres, far greater than the 1mm precision claimed by Thom. In other words, the evidence presented by Thom could be adequately explained by, say, monuments being set out by pacing, with the 'unit' reflecting an average length of pace."[19] David George Kendall makes the same argument,[7] and says that pacing would have created a greater difference in measurements between sites, and that a statistical analysis of sites would reveal whether they were measured by pacing or not. In an investigation for the Royal Academy Kendall concluded that there was evidence of a uniform unit in Scottish circles but not in English circles, and that further research was needed.[20][21] Statistician P. R. Freeman reached similar conclusions and found that two other units fit the data as well as the yard.[22]

The exact current version of the meter has varied over the centuries.

Now originally there were two proposed methods of discovering a standard unit of measurement;
the first involved a pendulum with a half period of a single second. The alternate idea put forward was to find the length of one quadrant of the Earth's meridian and divide it by 10 million.

The French Academy Of Science opted for the latter due to the fact that gravity can vary ever so slightly depending on where you are on Earth, which would affect the swing of a pendulum and result in a standard, world-wide measurement being impossible to discern.
However, even though a method of deriving the unit was agreed upon in 1791, the exact distance of one quadrant of the Earth's meridian wasn't known at that time. To discover it, two notable French astronomers of the era, Pierre Méchain and Jean-Baptiste Delambre were sent in opposite directions from Paris to work out the length of the Earth's meridian between Dunkirk and Barcelona.
What should have taken the two men little more than a year, actually ended up taking 7 years


Today, the measuring of a meter has come full circle bringing us back to the original discarded suggestion of using time, though we've gotten a bit more advanced than pendulums. Specifically, a meter is defined as being exactly:

An international research group has applied methods of theoretical physics to investigate the electromagnetic response of the Great Pyramid to radio waves. Scientists predicted that under resonance conditions, the pyramid can concentrate electromagnetic energy in its internal chambers and under the base. The research group plans to use these theoretical results to design nanoparticles capable of reproducing similar effects in the optical range. Such nanoparticles may be used, for example, to develop sensors and highly efficient solar cells. The study was published in the Journal of Applied Physics.



While Egyptian pyramids are surrounded by many myths and legends, researchers have little scientifically reliable information about their physical properties. Physicists recently took an interest in how the Great Pyramid would interact with electromagnetic waves of a resonant length. Calculations showed that in the resonant state, the pyramid can concentrate electromagnetic energy in the its internal chambers as well as under its base, where the third unfinished chamber is located.

These conclusions were derived on the basis of numerical modeling and analytical methods of physics. The researchers first estimated that resonances in the pyramid can be induced by radio waves with a length ranging from 200 to 600 meters. Then they made a model of the electromagnetic response of the pyramid and calculated the extinction cross section. This value helps to estimate which part of the incident wave energy can be scattered or absorbed by the pyramid under resonant conditions. Finally, for the same conditions, the scientists obtained the electromagnetic field distribution inside the pyramid.

In order to explain the results, the scientists conducted a multipole analysis. This method is widely used in physics to study the interaction between a complex object and electromagnetic field. The object scattering the field is replaced by a set of simpler sources of radiation: multipoles. The collection of multipole radiation coincides with the field scattering by an entire object. Therefore, knowing the type of each multipole, it is possible to predict and explain the distribution and configuration of the scattered fields in the whole system.

The Great Pyramid attracted the researchers while they were studying the interaction between light and dielectric nanoparticles. The scattering of light by nanoparticles depends on their size, shape and refractive index of the source material. Varying these parameters, it is possible to determine the resonance scattering regimes and use them to develop devices for controlling light at the nanoscale.

"Egyptian pyramids have always attracted great attention. We as scientists were interested in them as well, so we decided to look at the Great Pyramid as a particle dissipating radio waves resonantly. Due to the lack of information about the physical properties of the pyramid, we had to use some assumptions. For example, we assumed that there are no unknown cavities inside, and the building material with the properties of an ordinary limestone is evenly distributed in and out of the pyramid. With these assumptions made, we obtained interesting results that can find important practical applications," says Dr. Sc. Andrey Evlyukhin, scientific supervisor and coordinator of the research.

Now, the scientists plan to use the results to reproduce similar effects at the nanoscale. "Choosing a material with suitable electromagnetic properties, we can obtain pyramidal nanoparticles with a promise for practical application in nanosensors and effective solar cells," says Polina Kapitainova, Ph.D., a member of the Faculty of Physics and Technology of ITMO University.

Sand dunes may be lovely to behold, but they have long been seismic troublemakers to geophysicists trying to detect what lies underground nearby. A new study takes a stab at figuring out just how dunes are fouling seismic surveys in hopes of finding ways to work around them.



Seismic surveys looking for oil and gas use what's called a thumper truck, which literally thumps the ground to send seismic signals through the Earth. Those signals are received by seismometers some distance away. Geologic structures underground are detected by the way they reflect, bend and otherwise change the thumper truck's seismic waves.

When seismologists perform these surveys near sand dunes, however, they notice their signals are not coming through clearly.

"Surveyors have noticed a lot of noise," said Matthew Arran, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. "Sometimes you really can't read anything … So we are asking, what is this sand dune noise and can we do anything to avoid it."

Arran is the lead author of a report on the work in Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

To understand the sand dune noise, Arran and his colleagues created a mathematical simulation of a crescent-shaped barchan dune on a flat patch of ground. Then they simulated a thumper truck's seismic signal to see just what dunes were doing to the seismic signal detected by the seismometers.

They found sand dunes can act like echo chambers for seismic waves, reflecting them and re-emitting them for quite some time after the original seismic signal has died away. Sand dunes are made of looser material than the ground beneath them. This difference in material means seismic waves travel at different speeds in the dunes and the ground. In the real world it gets even more complicated, because there are often additional layers of varying densities and looseness within dunes that can further alter the seismic waves.

The researchers moved the simulated seismic signal source and seismometers around in the simulation to see if there were some locations which caused less of this noisy echo chamber effect. They found upwind positions from the simple barchan dune received less seismic noise. They also found their simulated dune was sensitive to some seismic waves frequencies and not others, which suggests surveyors might try different frequencies of seismic signals, as some might not set off the echoing in the dunes as much as others.

Arran said the next step is for scientists to go out into the field and test these ideas. He is hoping the new study will give surveyors a place to start when looking for an ideal way to perform their seismic surveys.

New research shows that a big earthquake can not only cause other quakes, but large ones, and on the opposite side of the Earth.



The findings, published today in Scientific Reports, are an important step toward improved short-term earthquake forecasting and risk assessment.

Scientists at Oregon State University looked at 44 years of seismic data and found clear evidence that tremblors of magnitude 6.5 or larger trigger other quakes of magnitude 5.0 or larger.

It had been thought that aftershocks—smaller magnitude quakes that occur in the same region as the initial quake as the surrounding crust adjusts after the fault perturbation—were the only seismic activity an earthquake could lead to.

But the OSU analysis of seismic data from 1973 through 2016—an analysis that excluded data from aftershock zones—provided the first discernible evidence that in the three days following one large quake, other earthquakes were more likely to occur.

Each test case in the study represented a single three-day window "injected" with a large-magnitude (6.5 or greater) earthquake suspected of inducing other quakes, and accompanying each case was a control group of 5,355 three-day periods that didn't have the quake injection.

"The test cases showed a clearly detectable increase over background rates," said the study's corresponding author, Robert O'Malley, a researcher in the OSU College of Agricultural Sciences. "Earthquakes are part of a cycle of tectonic stress buildup and release. As fault zones near the end of this seismic cycle, tipping points may be reached and triggering can occur."

The higher the magnitude, the more likely a quake is to trigger another quake. Higher-magnitude quakes, which have been happening with more frequency in recent years, also seem to be triggered more often than lower-magnitude ones.

A tremblor is most likely to induce another quake within 30 degrees of the original quake's antipode—the point directly opposite it on the other side of the globe.

"The understanding of the mechanics of how one earthquake could initiate another while being widely separated in distance and time is still largely speculative," O'Malley said. "But irrespective of the specific mechanics involved, evidence shows that triggering does take place, followed by a period of quiescence and recharge."

Earthquake magnitude is measured on a logarithmic 1-10 scale—each whole number represents a 10-fold increase in measured amplitude, and a 31-fold increase in released energy.

The largest recorded earthquake was a 1960 temblor in Chile that measured 9.5. The 2011 quake that ravaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan measured 6.6.

In 1700, an approximate magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit the Cascadia Subduction Zone—a fault that stretches along the West Coast of North American from British Columbia to California.

Collaborating with O'Malley were Michael Behrenfeld of the College of Agricultural Sciences, Debashis Mondal of the College of Science and Chris Goldfinger of the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences.

I understood most of that, and the previous posts. Something I have been wondering about, if the GP is capable of focusing magnetic energy, what, if any, effect did the original casing stones, and indeed the capstone, have on its abilities. Would they have amplified them in some manner?

John Cadman's material involves water channeled through in the pyramid subterranean chambers.
That when the water moved through the purposely carved out channels,
it produced a resonant "heartbeat" that reverberated through the pyramid.
He replicated the pattern of the subterranean chamber for his tiny property stream to run through,
and I have been there and seen it,
as it does indeed generate a heartbeat rhythm.
He probably is correct about that premise of the flowing water creating a sound resonance,
in the pyramid.
There was plenty of water right near there when the pyramid was built.
It would be quite cool to be at Giza while the Khufu Pyramid is generating a hearbeat rhythm.
Almost like a beacon signal.
Other "electromagnetic resonances" generated may have distinct purposes. 

Golod's pyramid in Russia, and the other's he built, were all built as experiments of all sorts,
similar to the ones mentioned in EA's posts,
within the immediate environments of those pyramid locations.   
His 44 meter tall pyramid did blow down in a windstorm.
Claims of higher crop yields to creating localized spiritually uplifted populations are mentioned as well.

The Khufu pyramid must have specific resonance applications that are generated by the geometry.
There are probably a plethora of pyramid geometries,
that can generate "resonance" ... and electromagnetics ... 
There is no reason to think that the Khafre Pyramid has less resonance capacity,
than the Khufu Pyramid.

You are also not limited to square base pyramids.
Hexagonal pyramids may even be better,
with specific corner angle geometries.

One group out there is going to tell you that phi based geometry pyramids,
will have more resonance capacity,
than tetrahedral geometry pyramids.
Or vice versa.

A whole lot of testing well beyond the Khufu pyramid geoemtry is needed. 
The Khufu Pyramid primary intended resonances may be something altogether different than we think.

A trio of physicists with Columbia University is making waves with a new theory about phonons—they suggest they might have negative mass, and because of that, have negative gravity. Angelo Esposito, Rafael Krichevsky and Alberto Nicolis have written a paper to support their theory, including the math, and have uploaded it to the xrXiv preprint server.



Most theories depict sound waves as more of a collective event than as physical things. They are seen as the movement of molecules bumping against each other like balls on a pool table—the energy of one ball knocking the next, and so on—any motion in one direction is offset by motion in the opposite direction. In such a model, sound has no mass, and thus cannot be impacted by gravity. But there may be more to the story. In their paper, the researchers suggest that the current theory does not fully explain everything that has been observed.

In recent years, physicists have come up with a word to describe the behavior of sound waves at a very small scale—the phonon. It describes the way sound vibrations cause complicated interactions with molecules, which allows the sound to propagate. The term has been useful because it allows for applying principles to sound that have previously been applied to actual particles. But no one has suggested that they actually are particles, which means they should not have mass. In this new effort, the researchers suggest the phonon could have negative mass, and because of that, could also have negative gravity.

To understand how this is possible, the researchers use a fluid-filled container as an example. In a cup of water, the water particles are denser in the bottom of the cup than are those at the top—this is because gravity is pulling them down. But it is also commonly known that sound moves faster when moving through denser material. So what happens to the phonon as it encounters this difference? The researchers suggest it would deflect upward, exhibiting qualities of negative gravity. They suggest further that the same thing could be happening with sound in the air around us, causing it to rise slightly. They acknowledge that such a rise would be too small for current equipment to measure, but note that improvements in technology could someday soon prove their theory to be correct.

Abstract
We show that the commonly accepted statement that sound waves do not transport mass is only true at linear order. Using effective field theory techniques, we confirm the result found in [Phys. Rev. B97, 134516 (2018), 1705.08914] for zero-temperature superfluids, and extend it to the case of solids and ordinary fluids. We show that, in fact, sound waves do carry mass—-in particular, gravitational mass. This implies that a sound wave not only is affected by gravity but also generates a tiny gravitational field. Our findings are valid for non-relativistic media as well, and could have intriguing experimental implications.

I just saw a video on my Firestick with this levitation with sound set to metal plate and sand and water make geometric patterns not ON the plate, but also ABOVE the plate depending on the sonic wave forms, pitch, octave, how many hz were mixed AWESOME video.

I CANNOT download the stuff on Firestick, unless I get a NEW Big Screen TV, & since I just got my old new car totaled, had to buy new car, I really cannot afford to buy a NEW widescreen that has a YELLOW video out....THEN I could record ANYTHING I want on Firestick.

All I need is about $500-$600 to buy a new TV with Yellow Video out with red and white for stereo sound, I have the software on my laptop next to the TV, I used to grab LOTS of videos with cable, but at $200/month for TV and meds are $200/month I only get $1,260/mo + $820 from my wife's EARNED BENEFITS.

But AWESOME video I saw that shot putting water in successive heights via syringe.

REAL COOL...I only watch TV when I eat my one meal a day.

The phonon phenomena of antigravity and negative mass is intensely novel.
There was a side link there in that article,
for unusual sound waves in quantum liquids that was pretty interesting as well.

On the subject of levitating blocks with sound, well, nothing would surprise me.
I think that you cannot over focus on that,
and consider that the fuinished product of the pyramid itself,
may have been distinctly intented to be used in specially focused sound resonances.
Perhaps that might be Cadman's pyramid subterranean water flow system theory,

Noone has really solved the mystery of the indentations on the Khufu Pyramid sides.
Hancock has a measurement projection of the indent itself,
so do I,
and I think my indent measure projections may be too shallow and his may be too deep.
But if it has to do with sound, which it may or may not, 
then the indent could be variable in depths per side, 
which is my interpretation of the indents.

How the triangles work

Ancient math lessons with the megalithic yard,
were most easily facilitated by triangles,
that have all three dimensional lengths ---> defined as -- whole numbers,
being functions of the megalithic yard.

Thus the student when using whole numbers for the triangle base length  and height,
would calculate the hypotenuse,
and find a whole number -- rather than a decimal.

Nobody else could supply profuse detailed angle tangent geometries,

This new set of triangles -- with All Whole Numbers -- in the dimensional lengths,
is how early man began to align his cultural harmonic code interpretations,

Surprising hidden order unites prime numbers and crystal-like materials

The seemingly random digits known as prime numbers are not nearly as scattershot as previously thought. A new analysis by Princeton University researchers has uncovered patterns in primes that are similar to those found in the positions of atoms inside certain crystal-like materials.


The researchers found a surprising similarity between the sequence of primes over long stretches of the number line and the pattern that results from shining X-rays on a material to reveal the inner arrangement of its atoms. The analysis could lead to predicting primes with high accuracy, said the researchers. The study was published Sept. 5 in the Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment.
"There is much more order in prime numbers than ever previously discovered," said Salvatore Torquato, Princeton's Lewis Bernard Professor of Natural Sciences, professor of chemistry and the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials. "We showed that the primes behave almost like a crystal or, more precisely, similar to a crystal-like material called a 'quasicrystal.'"
Primes are numbers that can only be divided by 1 and themselves. Very large primes are the building blocks of many cryptography systems. Primes appear to be sprinkled randomly along the number line, although mathematicians have discerned some order. The first few primes are 2, 3, 5, 7 and 11, becoming more sporadic higher in the number line.
Torquato and his colleagues have found that that, when considered over large swaths of the number line, prime numbers are more ordered than previously believed, falling within the class of patterns known as "hyperuniformity."
Hyperuniform materials have special order at large distances and include crystals, quasicrystals and special disordered systems. Hyperuniformity is found in the arrangement of cone cells in bird eyes, in certain rare meteorites, and in the large-scale structure of the universe.
The team showed that the order they found in the prime numbers maps to the pattern that results when X-rays interact with certain forms of matter. As a chemist, Torquato is familiar with X-ray crystallography, shining X-rays through a crystal's three-dimensional atomic lattice. With diamonds or other crystals, this will result in a predictable pattern of bright spots or peaks, known as Bragg peaks.

Compared to typical crystals, quasicrystals yield a distinct and more complex arrangement of Bragg peaks. The peaks in a typical crystal form at regular intervals with empty gaps between them. In quasicrystals, between any two selected Bragg peaks is another Bragg peak.

The pattern that Torquato and his colleagues discovered in the primes is similar to that of quasicrystals and another system called limit-periodic order, but it differs enough that the researchers call it "effectively limit-periodic" order. The prime numbers appear in "self-similar" groupings, meaning that between peaks of certain heights, there are groupings of smaller peaks, and so on.
The team discovered strong indications of such a pattern using computer simulations to see what would happen if prime numbers were treated like a string of atoms subjected to X-rays. In work published in the Journal of Physics A in February, the researchers reported finding a surprising pattern of Bragg-like peaks, indicating that the prime patterns were highly ordered.
The current study uses number theory to provide a theoretical foundation for those previous numerical experiments. The researchers realized that although primes appear random over short intervals, Torquato said, at sufficiently long stretches of the number line, sense can be made out of otherwise seemingly chaotic numbers.
"When you go to that distinguished limit, 'Boom!'" he said, snapping his fingers. "The ordered structure pops out."
Torquato co-authored the paper with Ge Zhang, who earned his doctorate in chemistry in 2017, and mathematics graduate student Matthew de Courcy-Ireland.
De Courcy-Ireland said that similar numerical patterns were described by the "circle method" developed nearly a century ago to find patterns in primes. "For me, what is interesting is taking these results that go back to 1922 and reformulating them in some way that gives you a new example, a system with a bunch of properties that is very interesting, and one that maybe could point the way to where you could look for more physical examples," he said.
The discovery may aid research in both mathematics and materials science. "Prime numbers have beautiful structural properties, including unexpected order, hyperuniformity and effective limit-periodic behavior," said Torquato. "The primes teach us about a completely new state of matter."
"What's fascinating about this paper is that it gives us a different perspective on the primes: instead of viewing them as numbers, we can view them as particles and try to map out their structure via X-ray diffraction," said Henry Cohn, a principal researcher at Microsoft Research who was not involved with the study. "It turns out to give us the same sort of information as traditional number-theoretic methods, and to tie in beautifully with previous work. It's a beautiful new perspective on this information, and it opens up new connections with materials science and scattering theory."
The study, "Uncovering multiscale order in the prime numbers via scattering," was published in the Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment on Sept. 5.

New nanoparticle superstructures made from pyramid-shaped building blocks

Researchers from Brown University have assembled complex macroscale superstructures from pyramid-shaped nanoparticle building blocks. The research, described in the journal Nature, demonstrates a promising new way to bring the useful properties of nanoparticles to macroscale materials and devices.


"There's been a lot of research in making superstructures from spherical nanoparticles, but much less using tetrahedral building blocks," said Ou Chen, an assistant professor of chemistry at Brown and senior author of the study. "Tetrahedra open the possibility of making much more complex structures, and the 3-D superstructure we demonstrate here is one of the most complex ever assembled from single nanoparticle components."
Chen's research group developed the building blocks used in the study a year ago. The particles are quantum dots—nanoscale semiconductors that can absorb and emit light. Their tetrahedral (pyramid-like) shape has important advantages over spheres, Chen says, when using them to build larger structures. Tetrahedra can pack together with less void space than spheres, making structures potentially more robust. In addition, the particles used in the study are anisotropic, meaning they have different properties depending upon their orientation relative to each other. Spheres, on the other hand, are the same in every direction.
In the case of the tetrahedral quantum dots, anisotropy was generated by treating one flat face, or facet, of each pyramid with a different ligand (a chemical bonding agent) than the other facets.
"Ligands help direct the touching process that occurs when two particles come together facet to facet," said Yasutaka Nagaoka, a postdoctoral researcher in Chen's group and the major contributor to the project. "In this case, facets with like ligands attract, which offers a degree of control over how the particles arrange themselves."
That's in contrast to isotropic spheres, which arrange themselves randomly.

"Anisotropy adds to the complexity of the superstructures we can make compared to using isotropic spheres," Chen said. "It also gives us some power to control the atomic alignment of the particles in the supercrystals, which could give rise to interesting properties. For example, you can predict that alignment will give rise to better electronic properties because electrons hop more easily through the lattice of the superstructure."

For their study, Chen and his colleagues dissolved their tetrahedral quantum dots in solution, then allowed the particles to assemble into three different types of superstructures: one-dimensional strands, two-dimensional crystal lattices and three-dimensional supercrystals.
The 3-D supercrystals were particularly interesting, Chen says, because of their complexity and the interesting way in which they formed. The individual nanoparticles first formed ball-like clusters of 36 particles each. Those clusters then formed the larger superstructures. When the researchers characterized the structure in detail using X-ray scattering, they found that the atomic structure of the lattice was indeed aligned, as they had hoped.
Now that they've shown a method for forming the structures, the next step is to interrogate their properties.
"The quantum dot building blocks are interesting by themselves," Chen said. "They have interesting photon dynamics, which may translate into interesting optical properties in the superstructures.
"We need to understand how to assemble these larger and more complex structures," he said. "I think these will be a bridge that will bring nanoscale dynamics into the macroscale and enable new types of metamaterials and devices."

Recently, a team of scientists led by Pablo Jarillo-Herrero at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) created a huge stir in the field of condensed matter physics when they showed that two sheets of graphene twisted at specific angles—dubbed "magic-angle" graphene—display two emergent phases of matter not observed in single sheets of graphene. Graphene is a honeycomb lattice of carbon atoms—it's essentially a one-atom-thick layer of graphite, the dark, flaky material in pencils.

In two articles published online in March 2018 and appearing in the April 5, 2018 issue of the journal Nature, the team reported the twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) exhibits an unconventional superconducting phase, akin to what is seen in high-temperature superconducting cuprates. This phase is obtained by doping (injecting electrons into) an insulating state, which the MIT group interpreted as an example of Mott insulation. A joint team of scientists at UCSB and Columbia University has reproduces the remarkable MIT results. The discovery holds promise for the eventual development of room-temperature superconductors and a host of other equally groundbreaking applications.
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have recently shown that the insulating behavior reported by the MIT team has been misattributed. Professor Philip Phillips, a noted expert in the physics of Mott insulators, says a careful review of the MIT experimental data by his team revealed that the insulating behavior of the "magic-angle" graphene is not Mott insulation, but something even more profound—a Wigner crystal.
"People have been looking for clear examples of Wigner crystals since Wigner first predicted them in the 1930s," Phillips asserts. "I think this is even more exciting than if it were a Mott insulator."

Lead author of the U of I study, graduate student Bikash Padhi, explains, "When one sheet of graphene is twisted on top of another, moiré patterns emerge as a result of the offset in the honeycomb structure. By artificially injecting electrons into these sheets, the MIT group obtained novel phases of matter which can be understood by studying these extra electrons on the bed of this moiré pattern. By increasing the electron density, the MIT group observed an insulating state when 2 and 3 electrons reside in a moiré unit cell. They argued this behavior is an example of Mott physics."
Why can't it be Mott physics?
Phillips explains, "Mott insulators are a class of materials that should be conductive if electronic interactions are not taken into account, but once that's taken into account, are insulating instead. There are two primary reasons why we suspect the tBLG does not form a Mott insulator—the observed metal-insulator transition offers only one characteristic energy scale, whereas conventional Mott insulators are described by two scales. Next, in the MIT report, in contrast to what one expects for a Mott system, there was no insulator when there was only 1 electron per unit cell. This is fundamentally inconsistent with Mottness."

What is a Wigner crystal?
To understand Wigner crystals, Padhi offers this analogy: "Imagine a group of people each inside a large orb and running around in a closed room. If this orb is small they can move freely but as it grows bigger one may collide more frequently than before and eventually there might be a point when all of them are stuck at their positions since any small movement will be immediately prevented by the next person. This is basically what a crystal is. The people here are electrons, and the orb is a measure of their repulsion."
Phillips credits Padhi with providing the impetus for the study.
These results were pre-published online in the journal Nano Letters in the article, "Doped Twisted Bilayer Graphene near Magic Angles: Proximity to Wigner Crystallization not Mott Insulation," on September 5, 2018, with the final official redaction to be included in the journal's October 2018 issue.

The difference that I did notice was that this fellow uses true hexagonal geometry lattice,
whereas the hexagonal lattice in the previous post is elongated and probably a tetrahedral hex.
The science research behind this is looking to spin off lucrative patents and such.
That is Ok with me, though these scientists are extremely well funded,
they do compete at the forefront of modern technology.

Has one of math's greatest mysteries, the Riemann hypothesis, finally been solved?

Over the past few days, the mathematics world has been abuzz over the news that Sir Michael Atiyah, the famous Fields Medalist and Abel Prize winner, claims to have solved the Riemann hypothesis.



If his proof turns out to be correct, this would be one of the most important mathematical achievements in many years. In fact, this would be one of the biggest results in mathematics, comparable to the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem from 1994 and the proof of the Poincare Conjecture from 2002.

Besides being one of the great unsolved problems in mathematics and therefore garnishing glory for the person who solves it, the Riemann hypothesis is one of the Clay Mathematics Institute's "Million Dollar Problems." A solution would certainly yield a pretty profitable haul: one million dollars.

The Riemann hypothesis has to do with the distribution of the prime numbers, those integers that can be divided only by themselves and one, like 3, 5, 7, 11 and so on. We know from the Greeks that there are infinitely many primes. What we don't know is how they are distributed within the integers.

The problem originated in estimating the so-called "prime pi" function, an equation to find the number of primes less than a given number. But its modern reformulation, by German mathematician Bernhard Riemann in 1858, has to do with the location of the zeros of what is now known as the Riemann zeta function.

The technical statement of the Riemann hypothesis is "the zeros of the Riemann zeta function which lie in the critical strip must lie on the critical line." Even understanding that statement involves graduate-level mathematics courses in complex analysis.

Most mathematicians believe that the Riemann hypothesis is indeed true. Calculations so far have not yielded any misbehaving zeros that do not lie in the critical line. However, there are infinitely many of these zeros to check, and so a computer calculation will not verify all that much. Only an abstract proof will do.

 

If, in fact, the Riemann hypothesis were not true, then mathematicians' current thinking about the distribution of the prime numbers would be way off, and we would need to seriously rethink the primes.

The Riemann hypothesis has been examined for over a century and a half by some of the greatest names in mathematics and is not the sort of problem that an inexperienced math student can play around with in his or her spare time. Attempts at verifying it involve many very deep tools from complex analysis and are usually very serious ones done by some of the best names in mathematics.

Atiyah gave a lecture in Germany on Sept. 25 in which he presented an outline of his approach to verify the Riemann hypothesis. This outline is often the first announcement of the solution but should not be taken that the problem has been solved – far from it. For mathematicians like me, the "proof is in the pudding," and there are many steps that need to be taken before the community will pronounce Atiyah's solution as correct. First, he will have to circulate a manuscript detailing his solution. Then, there is the painstaking task of verifying his proof. This could take quite a lot of time, maybe months or even years.

Is Atiyah's attempt at the Riemann hypothesis serious? Perhaps. His reputation is stellar, and he is certainly capable enough to pull it off. On the other hand, there have been several other serious attempts at this problem that did not pan out. At some point, Atiyah will need to circulate a manuscript that experts can check with a fine-tooth comb.

Unprecedented study confirms massive scale of lowland Maya civilization

Tulane University researchers, documenting the discovery of dozens of ancient cities in northern Guatemala through the use of jungle-penetrating Lidar (light detection and ranging) technology, have published their results in the prestigious journal Science.



The article includes the work of Marcello Canuto, director of the Middle American Research Institute at Tulane, and Francisco Estrada-Belli, a research assistant professor at Tulane and director of the Holmul Archaeological Project since 2000. They worked with assistant professor of anthropology Thomas Garrison of Ithaca College as well as other scholars to make their discoveries in the Petén forest of Guatemala.

A consortium of 18 scholars from U.S., Europe and Guatemalan institutions including the Ministry of Culture and Sports were enabled by the Fundación PACUNAM (Mayan Heritage and Nature Foundation) to analyze lidar data covering over 2,100 square kilometers of the Maya Biosphere Reserve.

"Since LiDAR technology is able to pierce through thick forest canopy and map features on the earth's surface, it can be used to produce ground maps that enable us to identify human-made features on the ground, such as walls, roads or buildings," Canuto said.

The PACUNAM LiDAR INITIATIVE (PLI), is the largest single lidar survey in the history of Mesoamerican archaeology. The collaborative scientific effort has provided fine-grained quantitative data of unprecedented scope to refine long-standing debates regarding the nature of ancient lowland Maya urbanism. Specifically, the key identifications of this study are:

  • 362 square kilometers of terraces or otherwise modified agricultural terrain and another 952 square kilometers of viable farmland, demonstrating a landscape heavily modified for the intensive agriculture necessary to sustainably support massive populations for many centuries.
  • 106 square kilometers of causeways within and between urban centers and numerous, sizeable defensive earthworks. This substantial infrastructure investment highlights the interconnectivity of cities and hinterlands as well as the scale of Maya warfare.

When this is aligned in the direct overlay,
the resultant angle produced,

Therefore: 
angle b ---> when added to ---> the Khufu Pyramid side face angle,
will result in:
the 1.87 ancient angle tangent geometry!

So the angle tangent test is also to determine possible -- hidden codes -- within the ancient constructs.

that the calendar counts,
of the Earth year -- 365 days,
and the Mayan Tzolkin -- 260 days,
align into the angle tangent.
It is impossible,
for that to be a random or chance alignment of numbers in ancient angle tangent geometries.

From there:
the Full Apex Angle C,
of the isosceles triangle that overlays the Khufu pyramid triangle,
is inspected.

The numerator of that Apex Angle C tangent,
is self explanatory.
It is the number seen in the -- denominator -- of that angle tangent,
that offers the unique convergence.
Demoninator = 24969.

Note that we already have two ancient timelines displayed -- 365 and 260.

The denominator of the angle tangent C:

finds this most unique arrangement within the mathematics.
