Researchers explain how evolution has equipped our hands with five fingers

Have you ever wondered why our hands have exactly five fingers? Dr. Marie Kmita's team certainly has. The researchers at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal and Université de Montréal have uncovered a part of this mystery, and their remarkable discovery has just been published in the prestigious journal Nature.

Read more at: http://phys.org/news/2016-10-evolution-e...s.html#jCp

Quote:This August, researchers in Chicago, Dr. Neil Shubin and his team, demonstrated that two genes—hoxa13 and hoxd13—are responsible for the formation of fin rays and our fingers. "This result is very exciting, because it clearly establishes a molecular link between fin rays and fingers," said Yacine Kherdjemil, a doctoral student in Marie Kmita's laboratory and first author of the article published in Nature.
However, the transition from fin to limb was not accomplished overnight. The fossil record indicates that our ancestors were polydactyl, meaning that they had more than five fingers, which raises another key question. Through what mechanism did evolution favor pentadactyly (five fingers) among current species?

so I went and finally just purchased the two albums by In This Moment,
stimulated by the great videos Keith posted.

their music certainly grows on you,
and aside from the heavy metal,
this band has another side of music that is quite interesting.

the second album disappointed me at first,
though the sound of Welcome to the Gun Show is good and even amusing,
that video was not that good.

However,
other songs on the second album have a totally different imapct when viewing the associated video.

In This Moment songs Promises and The Fighter have excellent videos showing the versatility of the band,
especially the song Promises

here:

and The Fighter is actually an excellent vocalist special

I'm pumped. Hope this is going to be at least half as good as I expect it to be...

In This Moment will be there of course, as well as this new band...

https://youtu.be/5DpKFLG8p3Y

You gotta be loud
You gotta be rude
So the world can hear you
You gotta be crass
You gotta be cold
It's everything we know
Turn it up, turn it up now!

Another day, a double shot of hate
Drink it up like gasoline
Underpaid, you graduate
To build somebody else's dream

With a noose as a tie
Do you fantasize of a much different life?
The fix for who they want you to be
Directly streamed to your tv

And when they turn their backs on you

You gotta be loud
You gotta be rude
So the world can hear you
You gotta be crass
You gotta be cold
It's everything we know
Turn it up, turn it up now
Loud
Rude
When nobody hears you
You gotta stand up
You gotta commit
Say “fuck it”, make the best of it

A broken home you're trying to mend
You've got one day left to pay the rent
We're not sure, but we believe in the lie
That it'll all be fine, when we die

It's so easy to grant the mirror
Power to control what you want to erase
Don't become another victim
“Put a smile on that face”

You gotta be loud
You gotta be rude
So the world can hear you
You gotta be crass
You gotta be cold
It's everything we know
Turn it up, turn it up now
Loud
Rude
When nobody hears you
You gotta stand up
You gotta commit
Say “fuck it”, make the best of it

The money's in the treatment, baby, not in the cure
So they fuel your pain with fear and shame and then hand you a brochure
The money's in the treatment, baby, not in the cure
So they build you up to watch you fall and then beg for an encore

What are you waiting for?
What are you waiting for?

You gotta be

You gotta be loud
You gotta be rude
So the world can hear you
You gotta be crass
You gotta be cold
It's everything we know
Turn it up, turn it up now
Loud
Rude
When nobody hears you
You gotta stand up
You gotta commit
Say “fuck it”, make the best of it

Make the best of it
Fuck it, what are you waiting for?
Another day, a double shot of hate
It's everything we know
Drink it up like gasoline
Fuck it, make the best of it

and Oh my- holy shit! they rocked live!

they played this technical metal masterpiece too.

Burn it down, brick by brick. Made in 2006
Lost and found, losing grip, I needed this
Question me not, for I gave up everything.

Forget me not, cause I’ve not forgotten what this means.

Strip me down, tear me apart, you’ll find one theme left.
No sign of stopping till my veins rust.
Strip me down, tear me apart, you’ll find one thing left.
I fucking know where I came from.

...And nothing can replace those lessons learned,
As I stood with my brothers on the side of the road.
No longer haunted by the skeletons.
No longer haunted by the past.

For so long, it’s all I’ve known
I’m crossing over the undertow.
For so long no one was listening
Determined to make their deaf ears ring.

Miles repeat. My worst enemy... is me.
But then 4 soon became 6
To shatter the canvas

Handed nothing. Loss, pulling the strings
Outlived the dead trends
United by distance

For so long, it’s all I’ve known
I’m crossing over the undertow.
For so long no one was listening
Determined to make their deaf ears ring.

I've been to hell and back, with no promise of return.
So I made friends with fire, to keep from getting burned.
No money, no sleep. Dedication
10 years on the road this is sacred.
And when I’m facing a wall, I do not quit.
...Cause if you mean it, you will make it.

Pulled apart in a world so demanding.
I’m still here, still standing
I’ve sweat blood from Stockholm to Scranton
Still here, still standing.

You can always rinse the surface, but the stain will remain.

For so long, it’s all I’ve known
I’m crossing over the undertow.
For so long no one was listening

You live, you learn, you defy the terms, but this house will be my home.
Beguiled, betrayed, it’s the price we pay, as trust will be our tomb.

If you mean it, you'll make it...

If you mean it, you'll make it

oh, btw, In This Moment was Excellent also. Maria did this one.. blew me away

Their set was stunning, the music was awesome, she played many of our fav tunes of theirs- and the visuals of her stage show were incredible. Very professionally Hollywood theatrics even Alice cooper would laud

she had another band with her as well, VIMIC.

I'd never heard of them, but as they played I told the wife "These guys have a BADASS drummer" then he did a solo that was F'in out of this world. turns out this is Joey Jordinson's new band, and he was the drummer and one of the founding members of the Grammy award winning metal band Slipknot.
They played this one also, it was incredible live.

Musically, the bands with her kind of dominated with their technical prowess and metal boom.. which I particularly love- being one of the first to ever experience diving headlong crazy into a mosh..

but that's just me.

This band "Illuminatica" is heavy now.

but way back in the dayola what you describe is payola in a sense and no offense to Jana but.

The Nocturnal Mortum stuff was interesting.
Just don't have the time to listen to the wide variety in depth,
so I have little patience in quick listen scrolling through the albums.
But they had me listening more closely.
Sometimes the heavy metal vocals are just too raspy voiced for me.

sheer heart attack pace from beginning to end,
as I scanned through it.
They have talent, I heard some good guitar leads.
Polish extremism rock, they started in the 90s.
Wild, I cannot imagine being able to remember all that heavy metal at that pace,
to play to a big crowd.
