Is this a metal yurt?
#1
This Monte-Silo House reminds me just a bit of a metal yurt.

This house in Woodland, Utah was designed by Gigaplex Architects.

From the architects:

A cozy home to accommodate a single man and weekend guests, including grandchildren, next to Provo River. Two linked corrugated metal grain silos arranged to allow the largest (27’ diameter) to have the most proximate visual and aural access to the Provo River, and the southern exposure to ensure passive solar heat gain during the winter. An electric mesh is embedded into the slabs of the lower floor as a first auxiliary heat source, and a propane-burning stove (manageable by internet) will provide the back-up. The metal grating and guard rail of the second level deck will provide shading into this great-room space during the summer months. Includes a “Bed in a Box” concept, each one complete with stereo sound and flat screen monitor.

Applause there are

They did a Silo Studio too-I like the incongruities of the outside being all utilitarian metal and the inside being all warm and cozy-

I mean, is this a happy face or what?

It's an interesting can-like building, but it's not a yurt.

There was an old man
who lived in a can....

While I do like the concept of living in a round building, you couldn't pay me to live in a metal building. I don't care how well insulated it is, it'll be 6 billion degrees in the summer and minus 4 thousand in the winter. It's a giant lightning rod and you'll blind everyone from the glare off of it from the sun. And you better hope you never have to live through a hail storm 'cause your ears will be screwed after that.

Peace

ETA: And it's still just an ugly grain silo. <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/hitler.gif" alt="Hitler" title="hitler" />

very very good points there-I've lived (very happily) in a converted water reservoir, always wanted a Quanset Hut building for something-art room... library... really there isn't anyway to really insulate them? I've got a new metal roll up garage door and it had some really cheesy styrofoam panels inserted on the inside for insulation. One panel was broken so I saw that it was just styrofoam pieces.

Structurally I'll find that top one again and see if there's a pic of the roof/ceiling to look at how they did that-

check out the sleeping space pods! [Image: 2006_monte_silo_resi_pg_014.jpg]

and I love that balcony-wonder what it's like in the winter? everyone keeps their tongues in their mouths I betcha!

Cut me some slack...I didn't say minus 4 thousand kelvin. Rofl There's another great selling point. I wonder how long it would take the older siblings to figure out that if they get the younger siblings to make snow angels and then get them to lean against the house, they can go do older kid things without the younger kids tagging along.

Peace
