Verizon, it was recently revealed, was required by court order to give the NSA telephone records from millions of its customer as part of a sweeping surveillance program.

Nacchio revealed these details in court papers in an attempt to show that he didn’t dump Qwest stock in 2001 because he knew the company was going to post poor performance results in the future. Rather, he suspected the company would benefit from participating in Groundbreaker, which he discussed with NSA personnel in Washington D.C. on Feb. 27, 2001.

This will come as no surprise to anyone, but NSA boss General Keith Alexander is pestering Congress for a new law which would provide blanket immunity for companies helping the NSA collect data on everyone.
Gen. Keith Alexander has petitioned Capitol Hill for months to give Internet service providers and other firms new cover from lawsuits when they rely on government data to thwart emerging cyberthreats.
Basically, he's arguing that if the NSA orders companies to do something illegal, the companies shouldn't be liable for that. There's some logic behind that, because when you get an order from the government, you often feel compelled to obey. But, of course, the reality is that this will give blanket cover for companies voluntarily violating all sorts of privacy laws in giving the NSA data. And, theoretically you could then sue the government over those violations, but we've seen in the past how well that goes over. First, the courts won't give you "standing" if you can't prove absolutely that your data was included. Then, if you get past that hurdle, the government will claim "national security" or sovereign immunity to try to get out of the case. And, even if it gets past all of that, and you win against the government, the feds shrug their shoulders and say "now what are you going to do?"

And, of course, rather than narrowly target this immunity, it appears that Alexander would like it as broad as possible.

One former White House aide told POLITICO that Alexander has been asking members of Congress for some time to adopt bill language on countermeasures that’s “as ill-defined as possible” — with the goal of giving the Pentagon great flexibility in taking action alongside Internet providers. Telecom companies, the former aide said, also have been asking Alexander for those very legal protections.
Given the revelations of the past few weeks, this seems like the exact wrong direction for Congress to be heading. We should want companies to push back against overaggressive demands from the government for information. Giving them blanket immunity would be a huge mistake and only enable greater privacy violations.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is under fire for lying about the NDA’s surveillance of millions of innocent Americans during his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

During the hearing, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) asked Clapper, “Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?”

“No, sir,” replied Clapper. Wyden pressed him. Clapper again denied that the NSA was collecting data on Americans. “Not wittingly,” he told Wyden. “There are cases where they could inadvertently perhaps collect, but not wittingly.”

In an interview with NBC News, Clapper said that he gave what the “least untruthful” answer. “I thought, though in retrospect, I was asked [a] ‘when are you going to stop beating your wife’ kind of question, which not answerable necessarily by a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ So I responded in what I thought was the most truthful, or least untruthful, manner by saying, ‘No.’”

In a recent video from the Cato Institute, Julian Sanchez told Caleb Brown that it’s clear, given what we now know about NSA’s, that Clapper lied to Congress. He explained that Clapper could have simpy declined to answer the question, but instead chose to give a false answer.

While he concedes that there is a need for secrecy at times, Sanchez notes that the nature of intelligence is “anti-democratic” and argues that Americans should be made aware of the liberties that are being sacrificed in the name of “security” and what checks-and-balances are in place on intelligence agencies to ensure that privacy is being protected:

California lawmakers passed a law (Senate Bill 35) requiring that voter registration be part of the health insurance exchange.
Last month, Covered California announced $37 million in grants to 48 organizations to build public awareness about the opening of the health exchange on Oct. 1.

Of the 48 organizations that got grants, only a handful are health-care related. The California NAACP received $600,000 to do door-to-door canvassing and presentations at community organizations.

Service Employees International Union, which says its mission is “economic justice,” received two grants totaling $2 million to make phone calls, robo-calls and go door to door.

The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor AFL-CIO got $1 million for door-to-door, one-on-one education and social networking. It describes its role as “engaging in both organizing and political campaigns, electing pro-union and pro-worker candidates.”

Community Health Councils, a California organization with a long history of political activism against fracking, for-profit hospitals, state budget cuts and oil exploration, got $1 million to conduct presentations at community and neighborhood meetings and one-to-one sessions.
These organizations, closely allied with the Democratic Party, are being funded by your tax dollars to conduct “outreach,” meaning the kind of phone banking and door-to-door canvassing that activists do to turn out the vote. They will turn out the uninsured to enroll on the exchanges and in the Democratic Party.

But that’s not all. The actual process of enrolling people in the new exchange system has been outsourced to Democratic Party constituencies:


In addition to outreach, California’s actual enrollment process is also outsourced to employees of community organizations, unions and health clinics. These enrollment “assisters” will be paid $58 for each enrollee they sign up. An additional $49 million is budgeted to pay them the first year, but in future years, assisters will be paid out of the premiums collected by the exchange.

California’s Democrat-controlled legislature doesn’t want voters to know who, exactly, is receiving close to $200 million in “outreach” funding, so they passed a law that creates an exception to the state’s open records law:


Amazingly, California legislators passed a law that the exchange could keep secret for a year who received the contracts and indefinitely how much they were paid. California’s open-records laws would otherwise prohibit such secrecy.

So the outreach is funded by federal taxpayers, but California doesn’t have to tell you where the money went. The level of corruption we are seeing these days is breathtaking. The IBD editorial concludes:


What is known so far suggests that California politicians are exploiting health reform to enroll millions of the uninsured in the Democratic Party and fill the coffers of left-wing interest groups with taxpayer money. …

The template is repeated in every state. The Obama health law creates a permanent stream of funding for unions and community activists by outsourcing insurance enrollment to them.

Assisters will also guide the uninsured to sign up for whatever non-health social services they may be eligible for, including welfare, food stamps and housing assistance, according to the manual prepared by the Community Health Councils for California’s implementation.

Anyone who remembers the days of James Curley, Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall gets the picture. If you were poor or a newcomer to this country, you went to the local ward boss and got whatever you needed in exchange for your vote.

The difference is that back then, politics was local. Now the Obama health law is institutionalizing this corrupt style of politics across the country. Whether you live in California or New York, local community activists and unions will be recruiting people to enroll in ObamaCare and sign up to be part of the permanent, beholden Democratic voting majority.

The country is truly in dire straits. How could things possibly get worse? Well, we could import 40 to 60 million low-skilled, low wage immigrants over the next ten years–talk about a fertile field for “outreach!” Nah, we couldn’t possibly be that stupid.

"We are concerned that by depending on secret interpretations of the Patriot Act that differed from an intuitive reading of the statute, this program essentially relied for years on a secret body of law," they say.

"This and misleading statements by intelligence officials have prevented our constituents from evaluating the decisions that their government was making, and will unfortunately undermine trust in government more broadly."

This is the strongest attack yet from Congress since the disclosures began, and comes after Clapper admitted he had given "the least untruthful answer possible" when pushed on these issues by Senators at a hearing before the latest revelations by the Guardian and the Washington Post.

In a press statement, the group of senators added: "The recent public disclosures of secret government surveillance programs have exposed how secret interpretations of the USA Patriot Act have allowed for the bulk collection of massive amounts of data on the communications of ordinary Americans with no connection to wrongdoing."

They said: "Reliance on secret law to conduct domestic surveillance activities raises serious civil liberty concerns and all but removes the public from an informed national security and civil liberty debate."

A spokesman for the office of the director of national intelligence (ODNI) acknowledged the letter. "The ODNI received a letter from 26 senators this morning requesting further engagement on vital intelligence programs recently disclosed in the media, which we are still evaluating. The intelligence and law enforcement communities will continue to work with all members of Congress to ensure the proper balance of privacy and protection for American citizens."

The letter was organised by Oregan Democrat Ron Wyden, a member of the intelligence committee, but includes four Republican senators: Mark Kirk, Mike Lee, Lisa Murkowski and Dean Heller.

They ask Clapper to publicly provide information about the duration and scope of the program and provide examples of its effectiveness in providing unique intelligence, if such examples exist.

The senators also expressed their concern that the program itself has a significant impact on the privacy of law-abiding Americans and that the Patriot Act could be used for the bulk collection of records beyond phone metadata.

"The Patriot Act's 'business records' authority can be used to give the government access to private financial, medical, consumer and firearm sales records, among others," said a press statement.

In addition to raising concerns about the law's scope, the senators noted that keeping the official interpretation of the law secret and the instances of misleading public statements from executive branch officials prevented the American people from having an informed public debate about national security and domestic surveillance.

The senators said they were seeking public answers to the following questions in order to give the American people the information they need to conduct an informed public debate. The specific questions include:

• How long has the NSA used Patriot Act authorities to engage in bulk collection of Americans' records? Was this collection underway when the law was reauthorized in 2006?

• Has the NSA used USA Patriot Act authorities to conduct bulk collection of any other types of records pertaining to Americans, beyond phone records?

• Has the NSA collected or made any plans to collect Americans' cell-site location data in bulk?

• Have there been any violations of the court orders permitting this bulk collection, or of the rules governing access to these records? If so, please describe these violations.

Snowden drama ensnares an angry Bolivian leader




It began as a seemingly offhand remark by the president of Bolivia, who suggested during a visit to Moscow that he might be happy to host Edward J. Snowden, the fugitive former security contractor who is desperate to find asylum. It escalated into a major diplomatic scramble in which the Bolivian president's plane was rerouted Tuesday because of suspicions that Snowden was aboard.

By day's end, outraged Bolivian officials, insisting that Snowden was not on the plane, were accusing France and Portugal of acting under US pressure to rescind permission for President Evo Morales' plane to traverse their airspace on the way back to Bolivia. Low on fuel, the plane's crew won permission to land in Vienna.

"They say it was due to technical issues, but after getting explanations from some authorities we found that there appeared to be some unfounded suspicions that Snowden was on the plane," the Bolivian foreign minister, David Choquehuanca, told reporters after the touched down in Vienna, where Morales was spending the night.
"We don't know who invented this lie," the foreign minister said at a news conference in La Paz. "We want to express our displeasure because this has put the president's life at risk."

Ruben Saavedra, the defense minister, who was on the plane with Morales, accused the Obama administration of being behind the action by France and Portugal, calling it "an attitude of sabotage and a plot by the government of the United States." There was no immediate response by officials in Paris, Lisbon or Washington.

"We were in flight; it was completely unexpected," Saavedra said on the Telesur cable network. "The president was very angry."

Speaking by telephone with Telesur, Saavedra said that Snowden was not on the plane. But given the aura of mystery that has surrounded Snowden's odyssey to escape US prosecutors who are seeking his extradition for disclosing classified intelligence information, there was no independent way to know for sure.

Bolivian officials said they were working on a new flight plan to allow Morales to fly home. But in a possible sign of further suspicion about the passenger manifest, Saavedra said that Italy had also refused to give permission for the plane to fly over its airspace in response to a request for a new flight plan.

Hours earlier, Morales, who was attending an energy conference in Moscow, had been asked by reporters if he would consider giving asylum to Snowden, 30, who has been holed up at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport for more than a week, his passport revoked by the United States, unable to go anywhere. Bolivia is one of at least 19 countries reported to have received an application from him.

"Why not?" Morales responded, according to Bolivian news media accounts. "His case has triggered international debate, and of course, Bolivia is ready to take in people who denounce things."

It was already clear by then that the Moscow conference had been overshadowed by the saga of Snowden and his revelations, which have deeply embarrassed the Obama administration, President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela, who was also at the conference, had suggested he might offer Snowden asylum but did not plan to fly him to Venezuela.

But Morales' remarks appeared to open the door. At least that was the way they were interpreted.

The problems began even before Morales left Moscow, Choquehuanca said. On Monday, Portugal, without explanation, had withdrawn permission for Morales' plane to stop in Lisbon to refuel, the foreign minister said. That forced Bolivian officials to get permission from Spain to refuel in the Canary Islands.

The next day, after taking off from Moscow, Morales' plane was just minutes from entering French airspace, according to Saavedra, when the French authorities informed the pilot that the plane could not fly over France.

There was also plenty of confusion in Moscow over how Snowden could possibly leave undetected on a government aircraft.
Government planes carrying foreign officials to diplomatic meetings in Moscow typically arrive and depart from Vnukovo Airport, which is also the main airfield used by the Russian government, rather than at Sheremetyevo, where Snowden arrived from Hong Kong on June 23 hours after US officials had sought his extradition there.

The speculation that Snowden would hitch a ride on a government jet was discounted by the fact that the plane would have to first make a quick flight from one Moscow airport to the other.

In an interview with the television station Russia Today, Maduro said that he would consider any request by Snowden. Then, ending the interview with a dash of humor, he said, "It's time for me to go; Snowden is waiting for me."

Martha Boneta. Do you know the name? Maybe you will remember.

Martha owns a farm in Fauquier County, VA, an area best known as a bedroom community for the District of Columbia. Martha might just be one of the linchpins that tie together several of the current Administration’s violations of our constitutionally guaranteed protections. (See Amendment IV). 

Martha made the mistake of wanting to sell fruits and vegetables grown on her little farm. Of course her entrepreneurial spirit was in contrast to the existing mindset among her neighboring government employees. So they established a “Piedmont Environmental Council” to rezone her property, and then threatened to sue her for being in violation of their newly enacted regulations.

But they picked on the wrong person. Martha retaliated by persuading the Virginia General Assembly to introduce the Right to Farm Act, also known as “The Boneta Bill.” It passed Virginia’s House of Delegates by a 77-22 margin last February, but as usual got bottled up in the politically divided Senate. So what happened next? Martha got audited by the Internal Revenue Service. Twice. Imagine that!

However, let’s jump back a step. Who was the driving force in the Piedmont Environmental Council? Why it was our old friend, Peggy Richardson! Ms. Richardson served as Commissioner of Internal Revenue at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) during the Clinton administration. She headed Clinton’s alleged abuse of the power of the IRS, and was either forced to resign, or was designated as Clinton’s sacrificial lamb. Either way, there was never any accountability or prosecution.


Now the connections get a little more interesting. Margaret Milner “Peggy” Richardson is a partner in the Washington law firm of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan. Guess who else is a member of that same law firm? Lois Lerner, IRS Director of Exempt Organizations, who took the Fifth before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, during their investigation of the IRS harassment of Conservative organizations seeking 501©(4) taxation exemption. And in addition, Ms. Lerner’s husband is also a partner in that same law firm, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan.

Hmmm. Richardson told TheWatchdog.org that it might be difficult for people familiar with the Boneta case to believe the IRS audits were a mere coincidence, but that it is “likely to be the case.”

Sure it is, Ms. Richardson. Sure it is. And if you are interested, I just happen to have this nice bridge up in New York City that I would like to sell.

President Obama released his latest Executive Order on Friday, July 6, a 2,205-word statement offered as the “Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions.” And although the president chose not to commemorate the signing with much fanfare, the powers he provides to himself and the federal government under the latest order are among the most far-reaching yet of any of his executive decisions.


“The Federal Government must have the ability to communicate at all times and under all circumstances to carry out its most critical and time sensitive missions,” the president begins the order. “Survivable, resilient, enduring and effective communications, both domestic and international, are essential to enable the executive branch to communicate within itself and with: the legislative and judicial branches; State, local, territorial and tribal governments; private sector entities; and the public, allies and other nations.”

President Obama adds that it is necessary for the government to be able to reach anyone in the country during situations it considers critical, writing, “Such communications must be possible under all circumstances to ensure national security, effectively manage emergencies and improve national resilience.” Later the president explains that such could be done by establishing a “joint industry-Government center that is capable of assisting in the initiation, coordination, restoration and reconstitution of NS/EP [national security and emergency preparedness] communications services or facilities under all conditions of emerging threats, crisis or emergency.”

“The views of all levels of government, the private and nonprofit sectors, and the public must inform the development of NS/EP communications policies, programs and capabilities,” he adds.






On the government’s official website for the National Communications Systems, the government explains that that“infrastructure includes wireline, wireless, satellite, cable, and broadcasting, and provides the transport networks that support the Internet and other key information systems,” suggesting that the president has indeed effectively just allowed himself to control the country’s Internet access.

In order to allow the White House to reach anyone within the US, the president has put forth a plan to establish a high-level committee calling from agents with the Department of Homeland Security, Pentagon, Federal Communications Commission and other government divisions to ensure that his new executive order can be implemented.

In explaining the order, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) writes that the president has authorized the DHS "the authority to seize private facilities when necessary, effectively shutting down or limiting civilian communications."

In Section 5 of his order, President Obama outlines the specific department and agency responsibilities that will see through his demands. In a few paragraphs, President Obama explains that Executive Committee that will oversee his order must be supplied with “the technical support necessary to develop and maintain plans adequate to provide for the security and protection of NS/EP communications,” and that that same body will be in tasked with dispatching that communiqué “to the Federal Government and State, local, territorial and trial governments,” by means of“commercial, Government and privately owned communications resources.”

Later, the president announces that the Department of Homeland Security will be tasked with drafting a plan during the next 60 days to explain how the DHS will command the government’s Emergency Telecommunications Service, as well as other telecom conduits. In order to be able to spread the White House’s message across the country, President Obama also asks for the purchasing of equipment and services that will enable such.

For obvious reasons, most American media is ignoring this news event in Egypt.

Obama is the mainstream media’s darling. God forbid they expose him for being a Muslim. Imagine: If what Adul Gheit says is true, American voters have elected a Muslim as the Commander in Chief of the United States of America.

Of course, what Aboul Gheit said may not be true — so, we are left to interpret the story ourselves.

Whatever the case may be, the Obama Administration has shown they largely support Islam. The term “Islamic Terrorism” is now banned from American jargon. Obama and his colleagues have tried time and time again to present Islam to the American people in a positive light, and as a religion of peace.

The EO is titled the Assignment of National Security Emergency Preparedness Communications Function (You can see the EO on the this website).

The EO begins saying that, “The Federal Government must have the ability to communicate at all times and under all circumstances to carry out its most critical and time sensitive mission.”

The order goes on to describe a new interagency working group assigned the duties of developing the new process of taking over all communications in the US in times of trouble to entail “the coordination of the planning for and provision of national security and emergency preparedness communications for the Federal government under all circumstances, including crisis or emergency, attack, recovery and reconstitution.”

The order also says that the working group will enlist the assistance of communications companies to create the new system so that the government can take over at any time.


“Such communications must be possible under all circumstances to ensure national security, effectively manage emergencies and improve national security,” Obama says.

When one sees how this President has used the various arms of his government to coerce others to do his bidding or face attacks from him, one shudders to think what this might mean to our communications companies.

And, of course, this is the same Department of Homeland Security that was found to have been buying an army of tanks and billions of bullets and racks of firearms.

That, along with an FBI that is now using drones against Americans, and we have a federal government gearing up for war… but against whom? Against us, maybe?

Obama certainly isn’t looking for real terrorists, after all. He made sure that no Mosques in the US are surveilled even as the rest of us are all being snooped upon.

How much more power does this guy need, anyway? You tell us below.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called the decision by Russia a "slap in the face of all Americans." Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez, D-N.J., called the development a "setback to U.S.-Russia relations."

Earlier Thursday, Snowden's representatives said he had been issued papers that allowed him to leave Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, where he was stuck since his arrival from Hong Kong on June 23. He apparently has been given a one-year temporary asylum.

WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy group that is supporting Snowden, also confirmed the details of Snowden's departure on its Twitter page, claiming Snowden "successfully acquired refugee status in Russia." In a statement on the group's website, it reported that Snowden thanked the Russian government for accepting his request.

The development comes more than a month after Snowden arrived at the Moscow airport from Hong Kong, and was effectively marooned in the airport's transit zone while he and his supporters tried to sway a number of countries to accept his petition for refugee status.

Snowden has petitioned several Latin American countries hostile to the U.S. -- including Venezuela -- to take him in. However, the logistics of reaching any of those countries are complicated because his U.S. passport has been revoked.

Meanwhile, Russia has refused to grant requests from the Obama administration to hand over Snowden to face federal charges.

While Snowden was holed up in the transit zone at the Moscow airport, he continued to leak U.S. secrets to the media. In the most recent report based on Snowden's documents, The Guardian reported on Wednesday on an NSA program that allegedly allows analysts to scour emails, browsing histories and online chats.

But Russian President Vladimir Putin had said that Snowden could receive asylum in Russia on the condition he stops leaking U.S. secrets. Snowden lawyer Anatoly Kucherena has said Snowden accepted the condition. Kucherena said the material cited in The Guardian newspaper article was provided before Snowden promised to stop leaking.

The Snowden case has further strained U.S.-Russian ties already tense amid differences over Syria, U.S. criticism of Russia's human rights record and other issues.

Snowden's father said in remarks broadcast Wednesday on a Russian television that he would like to visit his son. Kucherena said he is arranging the trip.

BREAKING! Benghazi Bombshell: Valerie Jarrett, Commander in Chief

Confidential sources close to Conservative Report have confirmed that Valerie Jarrett was the key decision-maker for the administration on the night of the Benghazi terrorist attack on 9/11/2012.

The chronology of the evening of 9/11 are as follows:

At approximately 5 PM Washington time, reports came in through secure channels of the attack on Special Mission Benghazi. Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey summoned the President and briefed him on the crisis, face to face.

Subsequent to that brief meeting, President Obama proceeded to the White House to dine in his living quarters.

After supper, Barack Obama had a telephone conference scheduled with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Senior Advisor to the President, Valerie Jarrett was present for that conference, which was held due to problems the President was having with the perception of him snubbing Netanyahu in previous, formal encounters.

The telephone call between Obama and Netanyahu carried on for a full two-hours, creating the appearance of respect between the two world leaders.

As that meeting drew to a close, Ms. Jarrett, who is also the Assistant to the President for Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, went from the living quarters to the White House Situation Room, where the attack in Benghazi was being monitored by Dempsey, Panetta and other top-ranking officials.

Whether she was instructed by the President to go there, or if she went of her own volition, is only known by the President and herself.

A critical question that needed to be answered, and the sole military-order that could have launched offensive-actions, neutralizing the Ansar al Sharia terrorists attacks on the Mission (the purpose of which is detailed here) and its subsequent attacks on the adjacent CIA Annex, was the issuance of “Cross Border Authority”, an order that can only be issued by the Commander in Chief, himself.

As was reported earlier by Conservative Report, Cross Border Authority was denied.

Two revelations are deeply troubling:

First, it is reported that an Army Special Forces team was present with an AC-130U Spooky (also known as a Spectre Gunship) on the tarmac at the airport in Tripoli, Libya. The Spooky is a technologically sophisticated, tactical aircraft, operated by the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command.

It operates under the overall Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, which is reportedly in charge of all military special operations units, including Army Special Forces, Navy SEALS, Rangers and certain Marine units, as well as this Air Force unit, and the one that pilots the “stealth Blackhawks,” used in the Bin Laden raid.

The AC-130U Spooky is equipped with weapons that sync with laser-designators, like those that Woods, Doherty and Ubben had on that lonely rooftop above the CIA Annex. The laser-designator was used to “paint” the mortar targets, subsequently claiming the lives of Woods and Doherty, and leaving Ubben without a leg. Had the C-130 Spooky been on station, over the CIA Annex in Benghazi, moments before the mortar rounds were fired, the entire outcome of the Benghazi fiasco would have been different.

Add to that, a team of Green Berets on the ground to secure and/or evacuate the Annex, and the outcome would have been two SEALS still alive, and a mess of dead terrorists.

The second, and most troubling aspect of the refusal to issue Cross Border Authority is, who issued the refusal. Rather than the President, the Commander In Chief, making critical decisions, granting or denying the authority to initiate offensive-actions in support of our valiant fighting men, the decision not to take action was made by a person, to whom the people did not elect to give such authority to, nor did Congress even have confirmation power over.

The military-order, not to initiate action, saving our men in Benghazi, was issued by the President's Advisor, Valerie Jarrett.

And this is a “phony” scandal?

Nothing about the above quote should surprise any of my readers, we all know the sick, twisted mindset of those involved in the Military-Industrial-Wall Street complex. What’s more shocking is the fact that these folks so openly admit it to the New York Times, albeit in a typical anonymous and cowardly fashion. Let’s not forget what Robert Shapiro, former Clinton official and Obama supporter told the FT in July 2010:

The bottom line here is that Americans don’t believe in President Obama’s leadership. He has to find some way between now and November of demonstrating that he is a leader who can command confidence and, short of a 9/11 event or an Oklahoma City bombing, I can’t think of how he could do that.


I discussed the above quote and related topics in my 2010 piece: The Dangers of a Failed Presidency. Well, if Mr. Shapiro thinks President Obama didn’t have credibility in 2010, one can only imagine what he thinks today. That is precisely what makes the current moment so extraordinarily dangerous. From the New York Times:

WASHINGTON — The United States intercepted electronic communications this week among senior operatives of Al Qaeda, in which the terrorists discussed attacks against American interests in the Middle East and North Africa, American officials said Friday.

It is unusual for the United States to come across discussions among senior Qaeda operatives about operational planning — through informants, intercepted e-mails or eavesdropping on cellphone calls. So when the high-level intercepts were collected and analyzed this week, senior officials at the C.I.A., State Department and White House immediately seized on their significance. Members of Congress have been provided classified briefings on the matter, officials said Friday.

“Unusual,” but somehow also extremely convenient for this to occur just as public opinion turns against the NSA and near passage of the Amash Amendment.

But intercepting electronic communications is one of the National Security Agency’s main jobs, as the documents leaked by Edward J. Snowden, a former N.S.A. contractor, have only underscored. At the request of intelligence officials, The New York Times withheld some details about the intercepted communications.

'A lot of people have come forward to share information with us,' he said during the radio station's 'Mornings On The Mall' program Monday morning.
